Baby's head measuring small :(

Do anyone have experience with this? At my last weeks appt dr said LOs head was measuring small in the 10th percentile at about 20w3d but everything else measured 23w3d right on. He did tell me not to worry AT ALL but I mean come on this is our first of course im going to worry and DH is worried as well... Iv read that it can be normal just wondering if anyone else had heard this from their doctor?

  • I don't have experience, but I don't think your doc would sugar coat anything. Try not to worry, all babies grow at a different pace. I am sure your LO is doing great!

  • Our baby was the same way, measuring side to side at about 18 weeks, but top to bottom at about 21 (I was 20 weeks). The tech said it has a lot to do with how she was laying. Apparently their little heads change shape pretty easily and she must have been laying with her head in the corner of my ute for a few days. The tech said when she changes positions, it should even out. I wouldn't worry to much about it.

  • I am a worrier by nature, but I have completely taken my MFM doc's lead all the way with this pregnancy.  If he tells me not to worry, I have been very good about not worrying.  I'm sorry I don't have any experience with this, but I would honestly try not to focus on it much.

When is your next appointment?  Could you ask him for some confirmation then?  Do you have another u/s coming up anytime soon where they will take another measurement?

My next appointment is May 17 and 18. I am high risk so I do go to 2 doctors and get ultrasounds every time I go to each of them so I will see her then and can ask then. This might sound stupid but DH kind of has a small head Stick out tongue

That is the one (only!) good thing about being high risk.  The extra monitoring and the extra u/s have put my mind at ease a bit more.  If the doc doesn't address it then, I would bring it up and just tell her that it's been weighing on your mind.  GL to you!

  • Yes. This happened with us. At our anatomy scan at 18 weeks the baby's head was measuring small. So, they did another ultrasound at our 22 week appointment and it was measuring closer to normal, although still on the small side.

But, my OB didn't seem worried at all. My DD also has a smallish head

  • My son was born 15 days early - 7lb 4oz - with a head in the 10th percentile (despite length being 70th percentile).  He doesn't have a small head now - and I was just glad that it made my drug-free birth just a little easier ;-) If your dr isn't worried, then you should *try* not to worry, too!
  • I noticed the same thing when I read my 21 week ultrasound report.  Our baby boy's head was in the teens percentile-wise, and everything else was around 50 %ile.  I had two anatomy scans from different radiologists (long story), one at 20 weeks and one at 21, and both radiologists said everything looks perfect with baby.  (I live overseas and the radiologists here do the ultrasounds themselves).   I'm chalking it up to the fact that I have a VERY small skull (and so does my Mom).  Hats are always too big on me, but I like to think my brain works pretty well ;o)  Maybe labor will be easier on us!

At my 18 week ultrasound, the head was measuring behind while everything else was measuring ahead. I also had another ultrasound at 22 weeks and I'll get the results next week, so I'm anxious to see if things have evened out a bit!
