Babies: 0 - 3 Months

what size diapers

I am going to stock up on a couple different brands of diapers to see what I like best.  But should I get size ones or newborns?  Obviously she would eventually fit into the size 1, but do most babies fit into the newborns?  Any suggestions from the new moms is appreciated!

Re: what size diapers

  • My baby boy is almost 3 weeks old and still fits into newborn.  I found that the Pampers Swaddlers fit best.  The Huggies are too big around the legs.

  • my DD worse newborns for like 2-3 weeks.  I am glad that I got some from my shower b/c all that I had bought were size 1.  Did you get any from your showers?  I would wait and see if you get newborns at your shower before buying any!
  • I'd get at least a few packs of newborns. Olivia wore them until she was 10lbs which took a while. She was in 1's until 3.5 months, and is now in the 2-3's. You'll want to get small packs for now, you never know what will give your kid a rash! Olivia loves the Pampers Swaddlers, tho, as do I. She never leaks thru them, and they are softer than the Huggies. ~A

  • My DS was 7'15' at birth and I had to send DH to buy newborn dipes.  The size ones were too big.  He was in size ones though by about one month old.

  • We needed to get more newborn size than I initially thought I would have to.  I personally wouldn't get too many though... you may prefer one brand over another.  We liked pampers newborn and we're in huggies size 1.

  • DS was 8 lbs, 21.5 inches long when we brought him home, so not huge, but good sized, and he fits in newborns diapers fine. I'd get a pack or two. However, we also use size 1s, and just fold down the front a lot, because they seem to give him better coverage at night when he's in a diaper for a little longer.

  • We bought about 5 packages of newborn sizes, and bunches of size one diapers. We taped the reciept to the newborn ones and agreed that if she needed diapers, we would only trade up in size (ie: no trading a package of size one for newborn, just stop and pick them up if need be). however, my DD was nearly 9 pounds at birth and now two weeks later, we are finishing the open packages of diapers from the diaper cakes and exchanged all of our newborn diapers, as well as all perfumed diapers.

To be honest, the hospital had pampers and due to the perfumes, she broke out into a very painful looking rash. The generics seem to do so much better for her and are almost half the price, so I would try some of those!!

?Ditto Huggies being too big around the legs. They were bad news for us. DD was 7.5 lbs and wore the Pampers Swaddlers NB until 2 weeks. The size 1s are still a little big, but the NBs were definitely too small. We went through about 4-5 packs in that time.??

  • We never used NB. Wait and see how big your baby is.

  • Our DD was in NB for six weeks!  Luckily we had gotten TONS of NB from the shower.
  • My DS was 8 lb 8 oz at birth and has been in size 1s the whole time, he never wore NBs. Good luck!

  • I'd get a small pack of NB and a small pack of size 1 that's it.  Then I'd wait until your child is born to see what size s/he is. Everyone thought DD would be born at about 8lbs. Putting her pretty much in size 1. However, she was born at less than 7 lbs and wore the NB size for over a month. We went through 2 large boxes of NB diapers. Plus, depending on how long your baby is they might take a different size. Our hospital sent us home with a bunch of NB diapers too.
  • DS fit into newborn diapers, but peed out of them all the time.  I'm finding that at 9lbs and 3 weeks, I like the Pampers 1-2s best.

I wouldn't stock up too much.  Maybe instead buy some gift cards to use to buy the diapers when your dc is here ( I like the visa ones since you can use them anywhere)

  • We're still using NB Pampers Swaddlers and Lydia is 1 month old!  I actually had to go buy more NB today because we ran out of them and have so many size 1's!  She was 6 lbs 13 oz at birth, but it took her over two weeks to get back to her birth weight after we left the hospital.  I think she's about 8 lbs or so now (haven't had an "official" weight check for two weeks)
  • In all honesty I wouldn't buy any newborn diapers..... DS was only in them a week 1/2 (he was 7lbs 13oz at birth) and the hospital send up home with 4 newborn diaper packages........ I would start at size 1 and go up..... We LOVE pampers swaddlers sensitive, even now and DS is in size 2

  • We needed newborns at first, but he outgrew them very quickly. I would stock up on the larger sizes since they'll be in those for longer. Plus, a larger baby might not need newborn size.
  • We did not buy any newborn diapers before she was born and we ended up needing to pick some up on the was home from the hospital. DD was 7 lbs 6 oz at birth. She wore NB for well over a month. Even after she outgrew them she was still too small for Pampers 1s. She wore Huggies newborn after she outgrew Pampers NB because they are alittle bigger. Now at almost 3 months and 12 1/2 pounds she is still in Size 1.
