(I know these are a little down the road for our babies...) I am not a fan of walkers and did not register for one. I don't plan to use one at all but for some reason my MIL told my mom that she might get us one. I see no benefit to walkers and would rather she buy us something from our registry that we actually want and need. I told my DH that it is his job to let his mom know that we will not be using one. I'd rather she know ahead of time that we will return/exchange it if it is bought...Sounds sort of mean but I'd rather trade it in for something useful.
What do you think of walkers?
Re: Walkers...
They are dangerous, hinder baby's development, and are completely unnecessary IMO.
If anything, I might buy a used stationary entertainer/bouncer to keep LO occupied for brief periods of time.
I totally agree with you...Just trying to get some feedback so I can maybe better explain this to DH. LOL... MIL sort of acts like walkers are a new thing. We registered for a bouncer and a stationary entertainer but after she saw those on our registry her words to my mom were "But now they have these walkers!" like they are something new. She's strange sometimes... She's already weirded out about me CDing and BFing (she never did either of those things...the last one for because of medication) and she thinks I'm going to do everything like my mom did when raising me and my brother and sisters.

Aren't walkers kind of an old school thing? I mean I don't remember being a baby but I feel like I've seen pics of me in a walker!
honestly, i don't have anything against walkers if you use them in an area where baby cannot fall down any stairs. i know that i loved my walker when i was a kid. we bought a walker for dd when she was four months old and it certainly did not hinder her development -- she started scooting across the floor at 5 months, crawling at 7 months, and walking just before her first birthday. granted, she didn't spend more than 30 minutes in the thing a day. but it was great to have her in the walker rolling after the cats while i was trying to make dinner. i think it encouraged her to move around even more than she was already.
i think the real problem with walkers is that some kids just get left in them for long periods of time and also that they are used in areas with a drop-off of some sort.
Exactly this. I'm not so concerned about the dangerous - I think most of the danger is from parents not paying attention when their child is in one - I'm more concerned with the developmental delays that studies have shown correlate with walkers. We will not be using a stationary one (a jumperoo I guess?) for this same reason.
According to DS's phsycial therapist stationary entertainers are much worse for babies development then walkers!
LOL yeah...that's what I was thinking when I heard about their conversation.

ditto, it is a safety and health risk more than anything else.
