So, school hasn't even started yet. I walk into my building this morning and I am told that there is a new student on my register. Okay. Said new student is in the main office with her parents. I go over and introduce myself and welcome her to my class.
Now I teach a population whose names are quite difficult to pronounce (at least for people unfamiliar with the names). I see that her name is spelled Sukhdik. I don't really pay attention to the spelling because I learned a long time ago that the spelling and pronunciation of my student's names are sometimes quite different.
Then the student said her name. The pronuciation is sook-d!ck
I already know that torment that this girl is going to go through being a teenager with that name in NYC.
I have to get her a nickname stat. Maybe Sookie?
I wish that this was made up. I really feel awful for this poor girl.
