Baby Names

honest opinions please...

Sariyah (sah-rye-ah) Charlotte

I love it but would love to know what other's honest opinions are without having to ask friends and family.

Our little girl will be half Persian and Sariyah is one of the few names I liked.  Charlotte was my Godmother's name.

Our last name is four syllables and very "Persian sounding" if that makes sense.

TIA

Re: honest opinions please...

  • If you have to tell people how to pronounce it, then it may not be perfect. I think its a beautiful name, but she may get called the wrong name for years to come. Maybe a different spelling would help?

  • Hmmm...that is interesting.  I actually just included the pronunciation to provide all information for opinions.  Does the spelling actually look like it should be pronounced differently?  Just wondering.  I am open to different spellings though.  Thanks!

  •  I think it is a beautiful name and I like that the name is a part of her heritage. Also, FWIW I knew how to pronounce it right away.

This exactly.  I really like it and I love that it has ties to her heritage.  I also wouldn't have had any trouble pronouncing it.

  • I agree with the PP who said if you have to tell people how to pronounce it, maybe it's not the best choice. You will be pronouncing it and spelling it the rest of your life (as will your daughter).

  • I actually kind of like it.  DS has a classmate named Sariah and I think I like that spelling better.

  • It is beautiful but I agree that it'll be mispronounced. I'm not familiar with Persian names and depending on your area, many others may not be. Before I read your phonetic key, I assumed it was pronounced: sah-ree-yah

Sariyah (sah-rye-ah) Sounds MUCH better :)

  • Very pretty.  I like it a lot.
  • If it is a Persian name I think you should spell it that way. It is pretty and I don't think dumbing down the spelling for Americans is the way to go. I doubt you would have to tell people more than once.

  • It think it's beautiful, it has a straightforward spelling and although it's unusual, it is a good unusual, since it fits with her heritage.
  • Thank you everyone!  Big Smile
  • I think that's a beautiful name, and I like that your baby will have a strong cultural connection to it.
  • I actually had a student named Sariyah last year. There was never any question abuot how to pronounce it from anyone. It's a beautiful name.

  • It's pretty, but when I said it out loud I noticed it sounded a lot like psoriasis. I know it's a bit of a stretch, but just thought you should know. Just giving it the bully test, I guess.
