Mireya

What do you think of it? I used to love it, but abandoned it while pregnant because DH and I couldn't decide on the spelling (y v. double ll in Spanish). However, the woman on the yoga mat next to me during class today had this name and every time the teacher said "Mireya," I thought maybe I should put it back on my list. Maybe it helps that the teacher was Colombian and saying it correctly?

Re: Mireya

  • I prefer it spelled Mireille. Other than the obvious similarity to the Mirena IUD, I like it. Mireille was on our list. If it was Spanish , I'm going to guess that it wasn't really spelled with a y, but 2 Ls, or like this:

    MIREIAGender: FeminineUsage: CatalanSpanish

Catalan form of Mir?io (see MIREILLE).

  • In Spanish, it's pronounced Mee-reh-ya. I'm terrible at phonetic spellings, though. The main difference with English is that the "i" would sound like "ee" instead of a short i.

Yes, traditionally it's spelled with a double L in Spanish, but I've seen a lot of people in this country (Hispanics) spell it with a y so it's not pronounced el-la at the end. Hence the debate with DH during my pregnancy and dropping it from the list.

Oh, I can so totally see that debate. I showed my mom the name and she pronounced the Ls as well.

  • I grew up with a girl with this name, and actually ended up working with her as an adult.

There were always pronounciation issues. She is Mexican (northern Mexico I think) and she pronounces it Meer-ay-jha, a very soft kind of J sound on the Y.

During HS, everyone said it correctly as Meer-ay-ya but sort of anglicized.

When we worked together two years ago everyone pronounced it as Mariah and it annoyed the piss out of me. Mostly because it's a gorgeous name when prounounced correctly and to be lazy irked me. She didn't seem to be bothered but would always introduced herself with the correct way to say it.

I think it is an absolute gorgeous name and while it might be hard to figure out the exact pronunciation, no one will really butcher it or find it too foreign.

It is NMS. I want to like it, but it seems way to close to Mirena for my liking.

I think I kind of like it because I like the name Mirja (MEER-ya).

     This, exactly.
