20/20 tonight

Apparently its about some church that advocates spanking. Not just spanking though. One of the quotes was "If you're not bruising your child, you're not spanking enough." There is also part of the teaser that advocates spanking a child as young as two WEEKS old. Indifferent I'm going to watch because I can't imagine how they justify that kind of behavior.

  • I wonder if this is the same religious type people who believe in domestic obedience... Whatever it is called where the wives get grounded and spanked for not doing what their husbands say 100% of the time.

  • OMG I can't watch.  My brother became a baptist after he married his baptist wife (my family is anglican) and when my oldest (now almost 18) was about 3 years old they gave me a book about raising children (the baptist way).  There was a chapter on "biblical chastisement" which basically meant what you speak of. Spare the rod spoil the child kind of crap.  Funny thing is my brother and I were not raised that way at all!  Plus they had no kids at the time so I found it really ironic they knew so much more than I did.  Ok....end of rant....sorry....but I just totally disagree with any kind of corporal punishment towards children....I don't think it's necessary and it really upsets me to even think about.  Children are so defenseless and they trust and love you unconditionally....how can you hit them??

  • I honestly don't know how I feel about spanking because I'm not a mother yet. DH is against it and I lean that way as well. If anything I think its used too much and out of anger. I would rather use time outs and taking away privileges. I'll never say "I'll never... to my child."

PPear, I totally agree with you. I'm LDS. We have an amazing humanitarian program. Service and charity is a huge part of our belief system but because of some crazies who have 112 wives and they are all 15 we get labeled as the same church. Also, people are so misinformed about the LDS church that people look at us and think we are a crazy cult. All Mormons are just crazycakes!

  • I believe in spankings, but only when its needed, (ie my son is hard headed sometimes and time outs dont work) and never out of anger, but as punishment. There is a difference between spanking as a punishment and beating a child, and i DO NOT believe in spanking a 2 week old!!! thats insane!

ETA: i have also NEVER bruised my son either THAT is also insane!

  • 2 weeks old- I'm literally about to cry right now. That is horrible.

Its awful. The girl in the story was 15 and raped and ended up pregnant. She was blamed and shunned and the guy that raped her was forgiven. The pastor told her she was lucky she didn't live in biblical times because she would have been stoned to death for her "crime." I can't even imagine going through that.

seriously, i might get flamed for this but whatever.
    the baptists are f*cking crazy.

my dad decided to be one a few years after having me, and he is SO crazy. its hard to handle sometimes.

  • Have any of you heard of Love & Logic? It's the only thing I do & it has worked great. I was spanked when I was a child & it never did me any good! Love & logic is a great alternative & isn't religious or anything :) . . . just had to throw it out there!

i agree. I do not believe that it is wrong to spank unless it is done in excess and in anger. Not all children need to be spanked or even respond to spanking. Every child is different and needs to be loved differently, appreciated differently, praised differently and disciplined differently. I think if a child responds to spanking they should know that they are being spanked bc of their actions and NOT bc you are mad. I also do not think you should discipline hitting with spanking...i think it can be confusing to a child. But bruising is definitely abusive and insane. It is sad that some churches can affect how people feel about churches in general. I go to a christian church and have even gone to a baptist church (as mentioned in previous post) and would never condone beating your child or disciplining out of anger and neither would the churches ive attended. THose dang extremist give church goers a bad rep!

  • My brother was in the army and married a woman when he was overseas.  When they came back to the states to live when their kids were 2, my (now) ex-SIL was upset because she couldn't leave marks on the kids.  Indifferent  Apparently it was completely normal on her side of the family to hit, spank, pinch, etc, until bruises were visible. In this case I don't think it had anything to do with religion, just different culture, but ya know...

Certainly is a crazy world we live in.

  • *not a flame*

Just for the record, not ALL Baptists are crazy.  There are SO many types of Baptist Churches out there and, just like in every religion, there are extreme cases. The one a PP was talking about is one of those.  I happen to be American Baptist and it is not at all like that.

All of that said.  Spanking a child before they know the difference between right and wrong, in my opinion, is just sad.  There are other things that can be done to first teach them what to and not to do.  Spanking a 2 week old, really??  That's just awful.

Absolutely not all baptists are crazy. I just happen to think this particular pastor is crazycakes. I've learned from personal experience about that. I live in a very baptist area and I've never experienced anything like that.
