Head Injury & Nosebleed

Carter fell on Wednesday night.  He was "surfing" on the ottoman and slipped falling head first onto a wooden puzzle stool.  He has a nice sized knot on the top of his forehead directly in the center.  He's been acting totally fine since then, but yesterday evening while dancing at Thomas he whacked his face on the chair in front of him that he was holding onto.  When I got him up this morning there was dried blood around both nostrils and a decent amount of dried blood on his crib sheet.

Now I'm worried that he may really have a head injury.  I put a call into the pedi to see if I should take him in.  While I don't think he fractured anything I'm thinking at this point that I should still get him checked out.

Thoughts?  Experience with this?

Re: Head Injury & Nosebleed

  • Cerys hit her head yesterday at my OB's office while my hubby was holding her- it wasn't a big bonk but it did leave a red mark over her eye.  Last night she started violently vomitting so we took her to Cincy Childrens Urgent Care.

The first things they asked were "have you seen blood out her nose or ears?"

So that would indicate to me he needs to be seen.  They ended up assuming she has a viral infection but told me they almost sent us downtown for a CT Scan at Childrens.  She's been fine today thus far.

It's better to be safe than sorry with the head.  The pedi we saw last night said that at 3 or so their heads are a bit harder and can they can deal with bonks better, but C is only 9 months so they were a bit more concerned.  They kept us there til 11PM when they closed.

    Hope all is well!!!

  • Poor guy!!

My parents next door neighbor is a Pedi.. he is always called for various bumps and bruises in the neighborhood. He told us that as long as the bump comes out.. (as opposed to sinking in) then your in good shape.

It doesn't hurt to call, but I'm thinking the blood is from whacking his face (came from his nose) and just came out while he was sleeping.

  • Well I ended up calling the pedi this morning for peace of mind and the nurse called me back to get more info.  She said we could probably just watch him at home, but she would check with the dr and call me back.  When she called back she said that due to his history of a bleeding disorder (ie thrombocytopenia) that if he has another episode of bleeding over the weekend then we will have to call the on call dr. and take him to Children's to be evaluated.

Keeping my fingers crossed and praying that he is fine through the weekend.  I'm glad I called for peace of mind and to know what to expect.
