red cheeks after eating?

We started giving him baby food and started out with green beans.  Well we had a horrible experience with them and we think they gave him horrible gas/constipation.  Monday-Tuesday he was up from 2-4am screaming bloody murder and when he'd burp he'd scream.  Anyways, we stopped with the beans and yesterday we gave him squash.  I'd say it was around 10:30am when we gave it to him.  When I got home from work at 9 his cheeks were a little red and rough feeling.  I asked my mom if they were like when she got there and she said yeah.  Does this sound like an allergy?

Re: red cheeks after eating?

  • I'm not sure about allergies, but mine got really bright red cheeks off and on while he was cutting his bottom teeth (its a normal symptom of teething).

Like how much on and off? Like one day here, one day there? Or just for a couple of hours a day?  Because when I went to work at 1 he did not have them, but when I got home he did.  This morning he woke up and the redness was gone.

  • I would give it a couple of days before trying either vegetable again. (Constipation is not a reaction, it's just his body getting used to the food. Foods that usually have a tough skin (like apples and pears) are prone to cause constipation because most are boiled down and pureed with their skin--pectin--the same stuff used to make anti-diarrhea medicine). If he is OK with rice/oatmeal, i'd stick with that at his feedings for now. After a couple of days, if you give him squash again, give it to him at the first feeding of the day. If he then gets flushed cheeks (usually a reaction occurs between a minute to 30 minutes of eating the food), then I would put away the squash until your pedi thinks you can try it again. (Most food reactions at his point are not full blown allergies, but their little bodies can't process the food for whatever reason.)

It was on and off throughout the day (sometimes lasting more than a few hours) but it didn't happen every day.

ETA - this is how I knew he was teething.  My mom happened to be here visiting and she was like, look at those cheeks, he is going to be getting some teeth!  It freaked me out a little at first.
