Believe it or not, I turned down a 3rd u/s at my RE's office that they offered for 9w. I had already seen my midwife, knew the next step and knew that it wasn't really necessary. I certainly didn't want to have to fight with the insurance company about paying for it. I do feel that if doctors cave in and give every woman an u/s whenever they demand our health care system is even more screwed. Same as with women going to the RE after 4 months of trying and no history of problems (someone on another board actually did this). It makes me scared for women in the future who really might need services but insurance companies will be cutting back coverage b/c of the expenses incurred by those who think they know better than a doctor.
That being said, I asked for and was scheduled for a non-routine 16w u/s since the issues with my 2nd pregnancy could have been found then but not any earlier.
If you are requesting one because you've had a loss before, or because you are spotting, I don't think it's right for a Doc. to refuse an U/S. But if you are healthy and just want one, I agree with a doc. refusing. So far I've had 3 and I'm only 12+ weeks. I had one at 7.5 weeks because I lost one. I had one at 8.5 weeks because I was spotting and that's what happened the last time I lost mine. Then they had me in for one at 11.5 weeks to track the cyst on my overy, and they noticed I had Placenta Previa... and now am on pelvic rest. I have another U/S at 15.5 weeks, and then will have my normal one at 20 weeks. They say I'll be going every month until my placenta moves to track baby. In this case, I'm glad they are staying so on top of it, but for me to just request an U/S out of the blue for no reason, I wouldn't blame the doc. for saying no. Doc.s do what the policy of that office is... and unles you have an exception... I'd side with the doc.
I think the dating us at 8 weeks and then NT u/s (if you want it) at 12 weeks is standard in Ontario.
WHen I called to book my 12 week NT scan, the secretary asked me if I had already had a dating US. so it must be standard.
I am surprised a lot of you have to wait til 20 weeks - that surprises me. But I dont think it makes a difference either way.
I'm also in Ontario and I believe the dating u/s depends on the policy of the dr you're seeing, actually. With my first pregnancy, there was no mention of a dating u/s, only the N/T and anatomy. I changed dr between losing that pregnancy and this one, and was told at the new office that it's their standard practice to do a dating u/s for everyone.
While I agree that it's especially reassuring to see your baby after having a loss, I can't actually see how requesting extra u/s would help. It's the time between them that's nerve-wracking, so unless you're going to have one every day. . . But maybe that's just me, since we all have different experiences and feelings about it. Just wanted to offer a different perspective from someone who's also had a loss.
