*Update on me (saw doc today) (long and ventish)* — The Bump
Trying to Get Pregnant

*Update on me (saw doc today) (long and ventish)*

Definitely not ovulation cramps or spotting:( Turned in to a full fledged period today. Well apparently not really a period since I didnt ovulate this cycle.) So now Im worried due to the severe pain I had with the fever on Sunday and now the super clotted bleeding. I hate my doctor. Though he did at least agree to let me get an ultrasound and he insisted I get blood work to see if I was pregnant (which isnt possible without ovulation and a period. But go ahead doc).

I can't change doctors because, for those who dont know, free health care doesnt work like that. Your stuck with the jerk you have or the on call doc (mine is both). Turns out when I printed out all my charts it looks like only 2 of the 6 charts I have are definitely ovulatory. All the others are either definite annovs or possible annovs with psych out CH's.

(so you guys know by free health care I mean the military kind not Medicaid)

So I mentioned to the doc that we are TTC, this is my 10th month (only the 9th if you count out the deployment)  and that I am obviously having some issues in the area with my short luteal phase, my annov cycles, my inconsistent cycles and now some crazy killer pain that attacked my left ovary and jump started AF. His words were "I cant help you with that." My thoughts? "No shvt Sherlock, I wouldnt want you to touch my ute with a 10 foot poll." What I actually said: "I know but how do I get a referral to an OB or an RE?"  him: "wait until youve been TTC for 12 months." me: "It's been 10 already." Him: "Just wait until 12."

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!

Then he schedules me for a U/S (only because I insisted since Id really like to know WTH just happened with my body. Fever+severe abdominal pain+ nausea+not normal vagina bleeding= something not right) but didnt put me as a priority patient so they didnt have any available slots for me for the U/S in the time frame they need to do it in (apparently I have to still be on my period). So now they are going to do it 2 weeks after AF and the tech I talked to said it's probably going to be pointless by then as far as trying to find out what happened to my ovary, but at least they can see if my ute is shaped right...

I seriously feel at a loss with everything right now. I WOULD have two beautiful cycles when MH was gone and then not ovulate the second he got home.... So much for trying to get testing any time in the near future either apparently.

I could really use some prayers for my sanity right now so I dont chew out a doctor or start crying for no reason. Also a few prayers for my body that everything is ok now and something didnt break or die or bust in there while I was waiting on doctors to actually give a crap would be much appreciated too.

Today is a day when I am sooo thankful for this board and all the friends Ive made here. Even when I talk to friends who know we are TTC I still feel so alone because they dont seem to get the hurt and frustration involved in this process, especially if your body is funky.

Thank you ladies. Love you guys!

  • Your doctor sounds awful and that really sucks that you have to stick it out with him when he treats you like that -- I would be super frustrated in your situation.  I really hope you can figure out what is causing the pain!  Good luck to you and hang in there!!

  • Wow your doctor sounds like a huge douche.....you have all the charts in front of you and he still can't get you in to see what is going on.

Well at the very least if you get an U/S two weeks after your period, maybe they can see if your body is gearing up to get ready to ovulate???

I hope you get your answers soon, I can only imagine how freakin frustrating this is for you!!

  • Kara, I empathize!!  I'm sending you thoughts and prayers and even more hugs.
I too wrestled with the Dr. yesterday over this kinda thing too, and she said no-go do to the mil tying her hands.  I promise TriCare covers early testing, you need to find a provider near you to go to.  We are looping around the system to try to get in also, I wish you luck.  I don't know where you are located, or if you are in a busy area, but know that you just have to keep trying!  I cried so many times yesterday when I didn't even think I would...ugh, I feel for you girl!

I really needed to hear that today. I feel like Im nuts if I start crying or am upset about this because so many people just dont "get" it so Ive been trying to be stoic. I think Im gonna take a "me" day.

Thank you guys so much. It's so great to know that Im not the only one who thinks he is kindof a jerk. I thought I might be over reacting about the whole situation, but everything Ive read said all these symptoms together can mean bad things and none of the doctors Ive seen seem to think it's a big deal. So irritating.

This made me feel so much better. Thank you ladies.

Yeah this is what I gathered as well. It seems to be just a stead fast rule with them. I have heard Tri Care covers early testing so I am happy about that.

What exactly are you doing if you dont mind me asking? The only thing I could think of would be to lie to them about how long weve been TTC, but I have been honest up to this point so Id hate to lie now and I dont really want to. Ill wait my 2 more months if I must, but we have a deployment coming up in August so its not going to give us much time to get testing done and then possibly treatments in before he leaves again.

We are at Robins AFB in Warner Robins GA. Not super busy but not the sleepiest Mil town Ive ever been in either so Im not sure.

I did make an apt with Women's Health (I usually go to Flight Med where my douche doc is, honestly all Flight Med docs kinda suck butt) for my annual and talked to the nurse there and she said that the doc there could go over my b/w and u/s so I didnt have to go back in to flight med if I didnt want to. I said YES because Im a bit worried the Flight med doc wouldnt know the difference between my ute and my ovaries at this point.

Thanks so much for responding. It's nice to know Im not alone in the Tricare battle of 2011. :)

Thanks so much :) I appreciate it. Yeah i like flight med for how quickly I can get an appointment sometimes, but for stuff like this Id just rather wait the couple more weeks.Yesh. Not that Women's Health is going to be MUCH better, but at least they know what a woman's insides are supposed to look like and do. The doc today looked at me like I was an alien when I told him I KNEW I hadnt ovulated. And obviously didnt believe me because he sent me for a pregnancy test (which again is stupid since Im on my PERIOD). Le sigh...

  • Sad Love you too friend! I am so sorry that you're having to deal with all this crap right now. Your doc sucks! I will definitely be keeping you in my T&Ps that all is well in there. Hopefully it was just a small ovarian cyst or something that ruptured & is now gone. And I pray that you won't need to see the RE & that when you are referred to the OB it's because you are KU in the next two months. <3

  • I'm sorry if this gets long, but your story sounds very similar to what I've been through.  First, I'd like to address the fever, abdominal pain, bleeding etc.  This is exactly what happened to me when I had my first hemorragic ovarian cyst.  The pain was bad enough to give me a fever and even vomiting.  The u/s is the right move to see what's going on, but that certainly sounds like a possibility.

I also have Tricare and I did not like my Dr. and was able to call Tricare and switch to a different PCM.  Do you have Tricare Prime?  My husband is Army so I don't know about the difference between AF and Army bases in regards to medical care...but I would think that you should also be able to request a change in your Primary Care Manager.

ETA:  WTF happened to the rest of my paragraph?  LOL  So, I think that two weeks is a really long time to wait for an u/s based on the symptoms you described.  Are you still having pain?  I recently had another blood filled cyst that ended up needing surgery, and while I was waiting for Tricare to get their shvt together to approve my referral I was in so much pain.  I kept calling Tricare and they said if my pain is severe to go to the ER.  Could you go to the ER with severe abdominal pain???  When I did, (two times during that horrendous wait) they did u/s.  BOTH times.  Maybe you could get around waiting that way?

  • Kara Im so very sorry you are having to deal with such a douche bag. Is it possible you could just go to the ER? It sounds like a Cyst that has possibly ruptured. There they can do a ultrasound and do blood work. You doctor is a lazy a hole and Im sorry you have to deal with it.

((huge hugs)) Im hoping by some miracle you can get into a RE asap because they will treat you better. Heres for thinking Military insurance was awesome. You are in my thoughts and prayers girlie.

I agree Im hoping it was a cyst because everything that is a possibility other than that could cause infertility. My PCM is deployed right now which is why Im seeing this guy, and my PCM isnt horrible, but he isnt a brilliant doc either. Seems like all Flight med docs are just kinda crappy.

I do have Tricare Prime and from what I know the healthcare system is the same military wide. I could request a new PCM but I think Ill just go see one of the OB's in Women's Health and if I like them I will switch to that.

Im more or less just worried about the possibilities of something being really wrong and not knowing about it for 3 weeks. I was totally fine with the u/s but since the jerk didnt make me a priority I dont know if something IS really wrong if we will get it in time to save me from a lot of heart ache down the road.

I went to urgent care on sunday and they had no idea what was going on. Just sent me home with some meds and told me to call my doc in the morning. I feel like the same would probably happen at the ER as well. Plus I was just at the clinic so idk if Tricare would cover an ER visit after that...

Why don't you call tricare and request a referal for an off post dr? You don't have to go to military clinics. Just tell tricare that you have a hard time getting an appointment in a reasonable amount of time and they should allow you tp switch. I agree tricare isn't the best but its free. There are ways to jump thru the hoops with tricare.
  • For some reason my phone won't let me edit my post. I also wanted to add that Tricare will cover all ER visits regardless of urgent care visits. Esp if you go to the ER on post.

I'm sorry if this gets long, but your story sounds very similar to what I've been through.

Thank you so much for responding and letting me know your situation. I hope that is all it is and we can move forward. Thank you so much!

I considered that but since Im with Flight Med they always have appointments available so idk if they would buy it. Is it possible for me to contact Tricare directly about how long its taking to get pregnant and get a referral just through them or do I have to get the referral through my PCM?

  • You could also tell them that you don't like your PCM and don't agree with the way he's proceeding with your care. I'm pretty sure you have to get the referal thru your PCM. If there's a Tricare office on post I suggest going there. They seem a lot more personable and willing to work with you in person.
  • K, I'm so sorry to hear this! Do you think it was possibly a cyst that caused the pain, fever and abnormal bleeding? I haven't read through responses yet (sitting in the Mobile airport right now), so, sorry if my response is redundant. I'm also sorry that you were given such sub-par healthcare! That stinks! Is there any other alternative. It really seems that, since its clear there are issues, you could go ahead with an RE. :( ::hugs::

    Awe thank you girl.

It is definitely possible, but there are other, worse possibilities as well (PCOS, Twisted Ovary, Ruptured Fallopian tube, endometriosis, Pelvic Inflamatory Disease)  and a host of other very bad for fertility issues. It's not even that I thought it was one of these issues, but I did want to make sure they were ruled out.

I did call my flight med nurse and she was much more sympathetic than my doc and she gave me a referral to an off base clinic to get my u/s done sooner (yay!). But still a no go on seeing an RE, though I think at this point we could probably be safe to go. But the military has a policy that they dont care if you havent had a period in a year, you arent getting a referral until youve been TTC exactly 12 months.

I also made my annual pap appointment with the Women's Health Clinic on base instead of flight med this year so that I can hopefully get some more definite answers and possibly someone who understands what Im talking about a bit more.

Thanks girl! Are you flying today? If so be safe!

  • *I appologize in advance for any major typos, I think my laptop keyboard might be dieing because it has been skipping letters I have typed a lot the last 2 days!*

I am so sorry!  After comparing my medical care from our previous base, which was 100% on base, to my current medical care that is 100% off base I have decided that the military clinics and their policies/SOAPs on Tricare are complete BS!  Seriously, getting a referral (for anything, not just fertility related) with my civilian provider is a BREEZE!  If there is ANY way you can change to an off base provider I would do it in a heartbeat.  I too dealt with ridiculously long appointment wait times, refusal for referrals (I had SEVERE eczema that was so painful it kept me up at night and they told me they could not refer me to a Dermatologist until I had been treated without relief by my PCM 10 time!  So not acceptable in my book, but I didn't think to voice my complaint the time), and very littleface time with the Dr when I did get an appointment.  I never felt like my Dr cared at all.  I always felt I was just the "next patient they had to rush back out the door because their schedule was already overfilled for the day so here is some 800mg Motrin see ya later."  If I can avoid it, I hope to never have to be seen by a base provider again.

I currently have Tricare Prime remote, we live far enough away from the base for myself and our daughter to be seen off base.  Poor DH still has to be seen on base and his appointment wait time and dealing with emergent issues are really bad sometimes.

I can tell you Tricare definitely does cover early testing before the 12 month mark when there are problems with your cycles that are documented.  I was able to get a referal from my civilian PCM for a RE after having 7 months of anovulatory cycles and some really heavy/long periods.  I am telling you this only because what they are telling you at the base clinic is BS!  You do not HAVE to have been trying for 12 months before getting a referral IF you have problems that can be documented.  For me, I just showed my Dr. my anovulatory charts (which she barely glanced, she took my word on it and was more concerned with wanting to get me the care I needed) and she knew about the bleeding already and the referral lady was able to get my Tricare referral approved that same day!

Please go into the Tricare office and talk to them about their policy for referrals.  I would also be calling Patient Advocacy to complain about the poor treatment from your PCM.  So many people don't think or know to call and complain with Patient Advocacy and I think that is a major reason for the horrible care *some* military Dr's "provide."

I hope you can get a referral soon, and I am so sorry about your bad experience!

After almost 3 years of IF and a crazy roadside delivery, we are loving life with our second beautiful daughter! Lilypie First Birthday tickers
