Calling all Gardeners

So since it's pretty much that time when people start planting their gardens, I was curious about what if anything you are planting this summer?  We have a small garden each year, but this year we are being a little more adventurous planting carrots, onions, cantalope, kale, limabeans, arugala, acorn squash, pumpkin, butternut and summer squash, spinach, corn, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, strawberries, and then my favorite an herb garden.

I really hope my garden does better this year. Last year the Nashville flood hit two weeks after I planted my garden, and just about ruined many of my plants.

So what are you planting? Do you have any great tips?

Re: Calling all Gardeners

  • My husband is quickly morphing into super gardener, so when I say "we," he's really doing most of the work. Our garden consists of: mixed lettuce greens, spinach, arugula, swiss chard, onions, garlic, potatoes, carrots, peas, snap peas, green beans, fava beans, tomatoes, bell peppers, hot peppers, butternut squash, zucchini, asparagus, watermelon, herb garden, strawberries and corn.

  • Just a couple of inexpensive basics like tomatoes, cucumbers and herbs. We're moving so hopefully we won't be there when they're ready but the garden would look bad if I just left it empty.

I'm also potting a lavendar bell pepper so I can take it with me. I know it's a novelty but it's so cool looking. I just wanted to try it.

Oh wow! you are going to be eating amazing produce this summer :) I am impressed with the asparagus. I have heard it is really hard like you have to plant it and then it is not edible until year 3.  Tell him GL! I have also heard that Fava beans are a great crop because they will grow even when there is a frost.

I'm wanting to landscape parts of our backyard but I'm not sure what I'm going to plant yet.

My mom is an amazing gardener and lives out in the country (her home is on a garden tour almost every year).  My dad just built her some raised beds for veggies and she's in the process of starting the seeds now.  Once it's time to plant we're going to go over and DD is going to "help her" plant.

Oh I am jealous of her raised beds!  DH and I thought about this, but I don't know if we are going to do this or not.  I have heard it is great for keeping the weeds out though.

  • On top of my flower beds, I have a raised square foot garden. We have a creole tomato; red, green, and yellow bell peppers, jalapenos, cucumber, squash, eggplant, rosemary, oregano, thyme, strawberry bush (in a pot), parsley, cilantro, and I have two blueberry bushes in my edible landscaping garden. I also had a lot of luck with my broccoli plants this fall. I was really surprised how much of a harvest we got out of the three plants.

  • Raised beds are excellent, not only for weeding, but for drainage, too. We have raised beds, but it's just soil piled loosely on top of our garden plot. We didn't have to buy anything extra. Here's a link I found helpful when first starting out: https://organicgardening.about.com/od/startinganorganicgarden/a/raisedbed.htm

This year we're planing bell peppers, broccoli, onions, squash, tomatoes, and  cucumbers. Good luck with your garden, hope it all works out!

Thanks! That actually makes me feel like something I would be able to do.  I will definitely check out that website.  Good luck with your garden, as well.
