2nd Trimester

how many different outfits/onesies should you buy?

Hi,

My baby is due on Aug. 5. I'm just wondering how many newborn outfits and onesies I should buy and how many 0-3 month outfits and onesies to buy? I know newborns will grow fast and in 3 months, it will be November. August is hot and she will mostly wear a onesie anyway, but I know she should have some pants on hand too...if someone could give me an idea how many of each to buy, I would appreciate it!

  • Honestly it's just a guessing game. Everyone told me when I was pregnant with DD not to buy many newborn clothes. Well, DD weighed 7 pounds when she was born and she wore newborn clothes for the first 2 months, so I had to buy her more after she was born. You just never know how fast or slow they will grow, so just start out with a few and don't take the tags off everything so you can exhange if needed!

  • This really depends on the size of your baby. my 1st was nearly 9lbs and never wore newborn. my 2nd was 7lbs and wore them for a month. I would not go crazy buying newborn until after the baby is here.

  • I would only have a few newborn things on hand. I'd also wait and see what you get at your shower- people LOVE buying tiny baby clothes. My plan is to only have very few newborn outfits. If LO is tiny and we think we're going to need more, a quick trip to Marshall's can provide a set of several cute NB size onesies for pretty cheap.

I'd rather buy a few more when LO is here if she really needs it.

(Also remember, even if it's hot in August, you'll be inside (in A/C I assume) most of the time. Chances are, you'll still want long sleeves/pants most of the time.)

  • I would buy at least a week's rotation of NB stuff, but I would buy it cheap/used from one of the many people whose big babies never really wore NB size.  Used NB clothes are so cheap they're almost free, because most people get a ton as gifts.

My son was 6.5 lbs, and he was in NB FOREVER.  NB was actually too big, so I went out and bought a couple of premie outfits the day we took him home.  In hindsight, I would have picked up a couple of $1 premie things just in case.  I ended up spending $25 on 2 outfits because I needed them right away for pictures.

  • I havent bought any newborn stuff.  Reason being is they are saying he is going to be a big baby.  His daddy was 9lbs 12oz at a week early, his middle brother was 10lbs 80z, and his little brother was 11lbs 6oz!  My DH is 6'7 and all the men in his family are over 6'2.  So we bought 0-3, 3-6 for the start of fall/winter, and 6-9 for the last part of winter.  We may buy some NB things right before he is born just in case.  But if he cant wear them then we can take them back and exchange them for bigger sizes.

  • agree with all that it is going to depend on baby's size. DS was 7lbs 7oz and was in NB clothing for about a month or so. in fact, i was at Carter's yesterday shopping for #2 and a friend and this question came up with some others in the store. A woman was there with her 2 month old DD and said that she just last week jumped to 0-3 month clothing. I would get a few things that are NB and then if a few more outfits are needed, you can pick them up. I wouldn't go crazy for the NB size b/c it's quick.

  • Baby will most likely be inside in the air conditioning during the first couple of months. I would buy mostly long sleeved shirts and pants.

This exactly!!!!  My DD was the same way!  She was 7 lbs 13 oz but grew very slowly and was in newborn size for several months, then 0-3 for a LONG time!  She was born in January and everyone had told me not to buy newborn and I had only gotten 0-3/3-6 clothing gifts.  All the 0-3 was winter and by the time she could wear it, it was too warm/summer weather for it!  Some of the 3-6 she was able to wear in the fall/winter when she was almost a year old!

My sister's DD was born last July at 4 lbs 12 oz but grew REALLY fast, so she's wearing clothes this spring that my DD wore when she was over a year old!

I would start out with a little, only wash a few things before baby is born and leave tags on everything so you can exchange for the sizes you need when your baby is born!
