2nd Trimester

HIV test w/ GTT ?

I hate hate hate needles. I am going to try my hardest not to work myself up at the lab like I did for first tri blood work.. (which by the way, I didn't go for until the start of 2nd tri) anyways, my lab sheet has three tests checked off including HIV again. I asked the nurse at the doctor's office and she said they test again cause I could have been exposed to it since my 1st tri blood work which is normally done at the start of pregnancy.. (not me though) question is... can I decline the test?  I don't know what other stuff is checked off I only can understand the HIV and glucose.

I just don't want to go through what I did the first time I was there. butterfly needle, having DH there with, thinking of other things do not work for me. Just being in a lab freaks me out.

  • Yes, you can decline it. I'm not sure if it is different in different places, but I was told at the practice that I go to that you can decline it.

  • sorry if I sound silly I just can't see the point and one less vial means a lot less anxiety for me.

  • You can decline anything, you are the one paying for their services. If you feel it is unnessasary, you don't have to do it. Just let them know and they will put down that you declined it.

  • Yes you can decline. I had to sign a consent form for them to draw it at my first appointment.

  • I declined the HIV test w/ my 1st tri bloodwork. They gave me the option to test me or the baby. I asked if the baby needed blood drawn anyway for other reasons and they said yes. Selfishly I said let the baby get the HIV test then. My doctor thought that was so silly and ordered it for my next bloodwork being done at 28w. Damn.

Most babies drawn for HIV at birth will be negative.  They have to do repeat tests and it usually doesn't come up positive until around 6ish months.  So drawing your baby in the hospital doesn't really tell you much.

  • I cannot see repeating it if you are in a monogamous relationship. The only reasoning I could see repeating it would be if you work in a field where you come in contact with blood repeatedly.

  • I was told if I declined the HIV test then they would immediately test baby after birth.  I have no problem with needles so I did it.
  • My question is why do they need to do this twice so close together?  It takes up to 6 months to show up in blood work. So if you were tested under 6 months ago than I can see it showing up in blood work taken less than three months.  It wouldn't even be detectable from my limited knowledge.

  • New York State requires 2 HIV tests during each pregnancy. I didn't see the point, but I did it twice with DS, and so far I've done it once this time. I think when they do the blood work to check for iron deficiency around 20 or so weeks they'll do it again.

  • NJ also requires 2 HIV tests. I think it is silly to do it twice but I will do it again, but it is not a big deal to me.
  • Texas state law requires HIV testing as well, so I don't think I could've declined it. I know there is no chance I could have HIV, but I would rather get tested than the baby.
  • I do not see what the big deal is about one more vial! The Dr. needs to be protocted too...she needs to know if your infected. Dont you want to know?...big deal..they are testing close together...get over it.

If I read correctly, (please forgive me if I didn't) you haven't gotten any HIV blood testing at all in your pregnancy? If you haven't, please do NOT decline this blood work again. Sorry if I sound like an ass, but that is truly selfish. If you do the test and are positive for HIV they can give you medicine through your pregnancy to protect your baby. With medicine and a c-section to prevent blood exposure as much as possible 7 out of 10 babies with HIV positive mothers are born without it. Without that medicine and the necessary c-section, you could be dooming your baby to a life with HIV. I know anyone as a mother would severely regret that decisions for the rest of their life if God forbid they did happen to be HIV positive and not know it.
