Nap/bedtime freak out!

My 16 month old for the past week will scream for a good 30 min. everytime she is put in her crib. Nothing has changed with our routine or her room, so why the freak out? Is this a fear of abandonment? All I want to do is go in and sooth her but I know if I do, she wins. But seeing her with broken blood vessels around her eyes and hearing her scream for me is killing me. Any suggestions?

I'm going thru this right now with my DD (15mo).  At first I went in after 20 min and it was getting me nowhere the 2nd & 3rd time during naptime.  I had to suck it up and listen to her cry.  One night it was an hour....the next night 30min...next night 20min and last night maybe 10-15.  I think its a phase. Now I have to put her down an extra 20min earlier just in case she decides to cry.  I've also read its normal for toddlers to let off some steam prior to sleep and this is the age where bedtimes are now considered "battles".  All you can do is be consistent in whatever you choose. They get the idea after a few days.
