The audiologist gave us a packet of information regarding DD's hearing loss. Apparently 50% of hearing loss is classified as genetic. Some percentage of those are syndromes and the literature had a list of them. I was just reading through and one of them caught my eye because wide-set eyes was a symptom. I've always thought DS2, while extremely adorable IMO, has rather wide-set eyes. I read on to learn it can also be associated with bright blue (or different colored) eyes, intestinal issues and constipation (and several other things, but these are what apply to DS). He's never had his hearing tested, but he's 2.25 and still only has a handful of words and the ones he does say sound very muffled, so H and I have wondered if he hears properly.
I'm not freaking out or anything. I just wondered if DS's appearance/issues would be something I should mention when we see the specialists for DD's hearing loss.
Here's a pic of a person with the syndrome I found when I googled it. I kinda think DS2 looks a bit like this woman.
Re: Why I asked about DS's eyes...
Dr. Google is wrong about 99% of the time. But if you're worried, definitely call the pedi in the morning.
Oh, I know. And I realize I'm being stupid. I won't call the pedi about it...just didn't know if it was worth mentioning to the specialists when they're investigating the cause of DD's hearing loss or if I'd get a big ol' side eye like "no, your kid's eyes are beyond totally normal you googling weirdo."
Yes, I think his eyes are wider set than your older son, but not too wide set. Wide set eyes are characteristic of many genetic disorders, honestly. I don't think they look like that though.
I have to ask, why hasn't his hearing been checked? My girls have it checked at their annual appts.
I talked to his pedi yesterday. She recommended I call EI again (he was evaluated in July), which I did yesterday for another evaluation. She's certain he'll qualify this go-round and a hearing test should be part of that if they deem it necessary. If they don't want to do a hearing test or he doesn't qualify for services, we'll go from there for a referral to the audiologist or ENT or whatever our pedi thinks the next step should be.
I honestly don't know and am a bit annoyed about it now that I think about it. He's been to the ENT countless times and had ear tubes placed twice and no one's checked his hearing. His old pediatrician was an idiot and we just recently switched, but I don't think hearing tests are part of the well-checks in our area.
I have brought up his speech delay/hearing multiple times, but his former pedi wasn't concerned until his 18-month appointment and then referred for EI, which he didn't qualify for. The ENT we saw for the first surgery (who has since left the practice) thought his speech would improve with the tubes, but they became displaced and clogged and never worked. The ENT who saw him the second time is the same one who examined/tested the wrong ear when we took DD in, so I'm not sure I really put a lot of stock in his credibility.
Thankfully, our new pediatrician is great and extremely thorough, so if he can't quailfy for EI, I'm sure she'll help us get the answers we need.
I don't think his eyes are that wide set. Hopefully you can get his hearing checked soon.
Good luck!
Okay, his eyes are slightly wide set but he looks nothing like that person at all! Also, my ped doesn't check hearing at well checks and we live in the same area. My kids did have their hearing tests in the hospital at birth though, didn't A have it then also?
GL!!
This is the woman who didn't want to take her DD to the audiologist b/c she didn't want to pay the co-pay. No surprise that she wouldn't think to have his hearing checked.
WTF?
Leave it alone, Purple! You don't know anything about the situation. So, if you don't mind please STFU!
Thanks!
Seriously, you are going to bring that up? If I recall she didn't want to PAY for it b/c money was tight. But obviously she did take her. And she has obviously been doing everything she can for her son. Wow- you suck.
Well, eff you very much.
My DS has been to eleventy-billion specialists and doctor's appointments and not one of them has ever wanted to test his hearing. They all thought his speech delay was related to his chronic ear infections, which, if you'd see above, were treated with tube placement TWICE.
Judge away. We were in a really bad place financially and I wasn't sure it was necessary. I clearly took her to the audiologist and have since been back for more testing and seen her pedi and an ENT. And that's just the tip of the iceberg at tests we're looking at. I appreciated the input from the responders because it made me realize I should take her and I posted later saying I was glad I did.
To Heidisean -- thank you. I didn't realize they don't formally test for hearing, so I'll contact my pedi about that. I thought when the woman was here last summer she said they'd have his hearing tested if he qualified, but it's possible I was mistaken.
Seriously?
She posted awhile ago, post was labeled flamable or something (I'm sure one of you has it saved or whatever you do to pull up random posts weeks later) that they were having financial problems and she didn't want to pay the co-pay, even though her DD had failed a couple hearing tests.
How is that not shitty?
And yeah, having a 2 year old that is having speech problems and not thinking to have his hearing checked, shitty.
There's a difference between not WANTING to and not ABLE to.
You obviously don't know OP very well. You're a biotch.
After she posted that she wasn't going to and didn't care what people thought (or something like that) and everyone told her not to. Why are some people treated with kid gloves? If she wasn't part of the "popular" crowd she'd have been flamed. The double standards on this board.
They were facing losing their house! You're an idiot.
Is mamarrazzi part of the popular crowd? I like her, but I don't think she's part of the mian "in-crowd" (and really, there's not a popular group on here any more...it was the "Crew" a few years ago, but there are very of them left here).
BTW: I wrote this because I don't think it's an issue of butt-kissing, but rallying around someone who we all love because she's one of us.
I didn't write this to be rude.
I wrote it bec I have experience with speech delayed kids and the first thing they do is check their hearing. Why would someone w/o experience know that?
Come on, you're the one that saves every post, don't you have that one? I really thought she said her co-pay was $20. Someone has to remember.
And regardless, can you imagine how long she'd have let it go if you all didn't tell her to take her DD? Still not seeing how that isn't shitty.
First of all, I have no idea what the hell you're talking about in regards to saving every post.
Second, congrats on never having to struggle to the point that $20 is a lot of money. It's reality for some people at times. When things are bad, $20 is a LOT of money.
Third, she TOOK the baby!
Go away.
I also have experience with speech delayed kids, and the first thing I am always asked, by pedi's, EI, etc. is "Was his hearing checked?" and "When?". So I find it hard to believe that it wasn't brought to her attention. Especially seeing how proactive she is about her children's health.
Oh please, she has taken him to numerous specialists who didn't see the need to test, but it was supposed to occur to her???
Can I have a list of the popular crowd so I know who to handle with kid gloves???
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
*deep breath*
Bwah. Hahaha. Ha.
Okay, really? I've been flamed up and down. I'm definitely not one of the "in crowd."
And it's "sh!tty" of me to go along with what my child's specialists are saying? It kinda makes sense that if his ears are full of fluid, he might not be hearing properly and the tubes should help with that, no? And to give it a few months after the second set was placed, which October 29th. Yes, it's been a little more than a few months, but I've been a little busy, what with trying not to lose my house, having a new baby and taking her for multiple appointments and all.
Someone sounds like a Bitter Betty. Did you not get to sit with the popular kids when you were in school or something?
She had to pay a specialist copay AND the coinsurance.
What the hell is your beef with mamarazzi? This isn't the first post of hers you have posted in. ( https://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/thread/49360324.aspx )
My guess is you are some person who wants to be 'in' with the popular crowd, or has got flamed for something. Lame. BTW-- we can see all your previous posts.
J-- FWIW, L has never had his hearing tested since birth screen too. Not at any of his well child checks.
The only one of my kids who have had their hearing tested is DS. They do it during their kindergarten year to check for problems. Babies do not get their hearing tested in the hospital where I live. The pedi asks about whether they respond to their name, etc. at well visits. But my 9 month old and 3 year old have never, ever had their hearing tested.
So, Purple, am I a sh!tty mom too?
My beef is with stupid. Especially when it interferes with a child's health/well being. Hearing loss and speech delays are serious. She needs to get off her ass and do what her kids need her to do, everybody is busy, these types of things *should* take priority.
Also, our co-pay is $75 for a specialist + the deductible.
The nurse at the hospital made it seem like it was a fluke that happens quite a bit by fluid in the ear. Then DD had an ear infection at 3 weeks, so I honestly thought that was probably the cause and further testing was not a priority at the time.
I was thankful for the responses because they made me see I was being an idiot about that. I fully admit I was being stupid about that situation. But the generalization about how "proactive" I am about my kids' health was just unnecessary. I owe you no explanation, but I can assure you that they are receiving all the care they need, regardless of expense. My DS2 has been to a neurologist, two different ENTs, a pediatric allergy specialist, pediatric dentist for fillings and to the pediatrician more times than I can count. We paid $800 out of pocket for his poop to be sent to Houston and analyzed at 6 months old. We paid twice in one year for ear tube surgery. We were able to claim healthcare expenses for our taxes last year because we'd spent enough, which was a pretty hefty sum.
I do whatever it takes to make our children healthy and comfortable and I'm seriously pissed off that you would imply that I don't. Good for you if $75 has never been a struggle. Good for you if you don't get collection calls for medical bills. But don't think for one minute that I wouldn't do ANYTHING it took to get my kids the best care possible, regardless of cost. We borrowed money from my mom to take DD to the audiologist for further testing. I literally had to wait a couple days to buy DH deodorant that week, but we took DD to the effing doctor.
Are they showing signs of speech delays or issues? If they are, then yes, you are.
Hugs, mamarazzi. I've been there and it's awful. People who haven't been there just don't get it. I had someone at a check-out lane question me when I couldn't donate $5 at Christmas to a toy charity...and $5 would mean us not eating for a few days at that point, pre marriage. I sat and cried in the parking lot. People are cruel...sorry.
I hope things are going better for you guys.
That's great, that is what a parent is supposed to do. I have (actually currently am) been there, my kids don't suffer for it. No matter who I have to beg for a loan. I hope you get your son in for a hearing test asap. Seriously, speech delays are serious and if his hearing properly is what is holding him back it needs to be addressed sooner rather then later.

You just pick on others instead. that's cool. about as cool as being gutless enough to create purplegolfish when you obviously have been on this board keeping track of other nesties. and then you're coming off all that is great, that is what a parent is supposed to do. such a meaningful compliment coming from you. or a version of you.
run away to baby showers or babies 9-12 and post your happiness there too, as long as your kids don't suffer. you know, you being so well adjusted to troll and all.
kind of random, but you seriously like the word seriously. it would be ok if your went away. seriously.
Hi, I assume you are talking about Waardenburg syndrome? I am very familiar with this as it was something that came up a few months after DD was born. She had serious pooping issues and one eye that has a section of green in it (both are blue, but one has a 1/4 green). I spent MONTHS researching this as I (and her GIs) tried to figure out what was causing her constipation. It turns out that her intestinal issues and eye color were not related at all.
Anyway, I saw the pic of your son and he definitely does not look like he has this syndrome. Not even close. Also, the angle of the eyes (I'm not sure of the scientific term for this) is very important in Waardenburg's. See how the eyes of the lady are slightly turned in? Waardenburg syndrome is soooooo rare. Like unbelievably rare. The pediatric opthamologist who examined DD is world renowned and wrote THE text book on pediatric opthamology. In his entire career, he's only seen one case of it.
Don't worry
wow. Purplegoldfish is a biitch, I'm sorry she's bugging you J. (((HUGS))) You're a great mom and do not for one minute think differently.
FWIW- I don't think DS1 (or 2) has had a real hearing test. He's had the can you hear this while they make noise behind him to see which side he turns to, but that's all.
You just posted how it was freaky that your kids looked exactly alike - so BEFORE you looked up possible related issues, you did not see his eyes this way. Which means to me that there is no issue with his eyes. If it was part of something, you'd have noticed before now. Dr. Google is freaking you out, step away. :-)
We've never, other than the hospital at birth, had any hearing tests other than before & after DS's 2nd set of tubes, they aren't usually part of a normal well visit. But in your case considering the circumstances, I'd definitely get everyone checked out for peace of mind, copays bedamned. Of all people, believe me, I know money can be hard to scrape up, I feel ya.
