Water broke: I need positive experiences please!!

Baby A's water broke yesterday...I think it happened on Sunday and have been in the hospital since then, the initial test in Sunday only showed me having contractions and a positive ffn.  I have had 2 steroid shots for their lungs and they have me on some antibitoics to fight off any infections.

The peri and my OB want to get the babies out at 34w.  They say that usually when a water breaks early they do all they can to get the babies to 34w.  Since I will be 34 tomorrow they want to get them out before any kind of infection has a chance to set in.  They are very sure that it is baby a's water that broke and he happens to be sitting right on my cervix so anything that gets in will definitiely get to him.

Please share your positive stories with having 34w babies and back me off the ledge of craziness!!!

TIA!

  • Good luck tomorrow Smile

I had my ggg at 33w6d and they were 3.12 lbs, 4.4 lbs and 5.5 lbs... I had the steroid shots 7 days before.  No O2 support at all :)  Feeders and Growers (for 2 of them :) -- the 3rd had unrelated problem....

  • Good luck Momma!  I do not have experience, but based on many stories from this board, I think your LOs have a fantastic outlook.  That is great that you got a steriod shot in as well.  I will be thinking of you and your LOs!
  • Try to stay calm, believe me, I know the panic you are feeling.  My water broke at 32 weeks, 6 days and my boys were born 4 hours later.  I had had no steroid shots or anything.  They were in the NICU for two weeks but did great and are now healthy, HUGE and completely thriving!  If I can give you any advice, it is to try to breathe and take it all in.

When things happen so fast, it is so overwhelming and I wished I had soaked in the last hours of feeling my babies moving inside me, etc..  Everything happened so fast and I was so scared (and I'm sure you are too) that I really didn't have time to soak in what was happening.  Also, it may sound silly in the midst of all that is happening right now but take some pictures!!  My husband did take one quick picture of me in the bathroom of my hospital room before I changed into my gown but I wish I had a couple more and a bare belly one.  I wasn't much for bare belly pics but trust me, take one!  You will want to be able to look back and see what you looked like.

Take care, we'll be thinking about you!

  • No experience here, just good thoughts for you and your boys!  Its great that you got the two steroid shots in before delivery. I work at a hospital and we see babies born as early as 30 weeks without any major complications (and we don't even have a NICU, just a special care nursery) GL tomorrow!

  • My water broke at 33w 3d and they tried to stop labor until I got to 34w but my body had other plans.  I was able to get one steroid shot and they did give me something else that was supposed to prolong labor which did not work.  I ended up having the girls the next morning at 33w 4d.  Baby A was 4lbs 5oz and Baby B was 5lbs 5 oz.  They were both in the NICU for two weeks as feeders/growers.  Lauryn (B) was on cpap for a couple of hours but was off it by the time I saw them a few hours later.

They both were a bit jaundice but otherwise did really well in the NICU.  They came home a day apart.

Good luck to you and your LO's.

  • Hi!!!  I was wondering how you are doing. I'm on hosp bedrest to for PTL. Hang in there. I will pray that your boys come out strong and healthy!!!
  • I don't have any person experience with this but I just wanted to tell you that my sister-in-law had twins 3 1/2 years ago.  Her water broke at 33w exactly and the girls were born a few hours later.  No steroid shots or anything.  One of the babies was under the oxygen hood for a few hours and the other didn't need any breathing help at all.  Other than that, they were just feeders/growers.  One came home after 2 weeks and one came home after 3 weeks.  They are perfectly healthy 3 year old little girls now.  Good luck tomorrow!  God bless you and your family!

  • No advice, just hugs! Glad you got the steroid shots in!
  • My water broke at 28 weeks 6 days. They were doing the same with me steriod shots and antibiotics and I was on mag. Body thought otherwise and at 29 weeks 1 day my twin boys were born about 12 hours after my last steroid shot. ?I truely believe the steriod shots help alot so I'm glad you were able to get them. My boys were never on a ventilator. They were on cpap for only few days which gives them pressure. They are still in nicu probably until they are considered 38 weeks or until their due date. My boys will be 34 weeks tomorrow. They are finally learning to take a bottle and off oxygen and doing very well! Best of luck!

  • I don't have any experience, but it's great that you made it to 34 weeks. Good luck!!! I'll be praying for two healthy babies!

  • no advice mama, just HUGS. So good you made it to 34 weeks! Praying for two healthy babies.
  • Mine were born 34w1d and are AWESOME. They were small but healthy and spent 3 weeks in the NICU. It can be really scary (I cried through my whole c-section) but 34 weeks is really good. You've done great. Hang in there.

  • Mine were 32 weekers and only 1 needed CPAP the rest were breathing independantly.  They were 4.3, 4.10, 3.1, and 3.11 and spent 23-35 days feeding and growing.

  • My little ones were born at 32 weeks 2 days and all of them were born healthy and were just feeders and growers.  My daughter didn't need any breathing assistance at all and my other DD and DS were only on CPAP for one day. I had two sets of steroid shots (one at 23weeks 5days and one at 32 weeks even right before delivery).  You've done a great job making it to 34 weeks.  Best of luck to you.

  • My water was leaking around 33 weeks &  2 days and then broke again around 33 weeks and 4 days... I had to also stay in the hospital and had a c section when I was at exactly 34 weeks for the same reason, avoid infection, etc.  Plus my contractions were becoming stronger and more frequent. By the time I was going in for my c section, they were every 3-5 mins. I did not feel allot of pain either which the doctor could not believe. They weighed 4 pounds 1 ounce and 5 pounds 6 ounces.  Good weights but they were still really tiny.  They stayed in the special care nursery for about 3 weeks before coming home.  They needed oxygen when they were first born and while in the nursery they had to stay in the incubator until their body temps maintained at a good level and they had feeding tubes... nothing serious though. You figure they are supposed to stay in the womb for another 6 weeks or so... As nerve wracking as it can be, stay positive and remember to take care of you as well. Good luck!
