Nutramigen and reflux- need advice

My DS is 8 weeks tomorrow and was diagnosed with reflux at 4 weeks.  We have him on Prilosec with some relief but the pedi (GI actually) told us to try Nutramigen.  He was on Enfamil AR but it seemed to make him worse and she said sometimes Nutramigen is easier for them to digest and helps with the reflux.  Right now I weaned him off the AR and just have him on the regular Enfamil Premium. I'm so nervous to make any more changes to his routine because he's been so miserable for so long, but I know we need to find a formula that works and what we are doing isn't keeping him comfortable.  Anyone have a baby with reflux that tried this?  Or any other formula recommendations for reflux?

Re: Nutramigen and reflux- need advice

  • My DD#1 had GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) and I have to say that Nutramigen was the best thing that ever happened to us. My DD used to projectile vomit, screamed constantly, she had blood in her stool ( the lining of her stomach was being torn ) from regular formula. After several months of her ped. not knowing what was wrong with her I asked to speak with a specialist. They ran some test and found out she had GERD and switched her to Nutramigen and her crying, vomiting and bloody stool stopped within a week.

  • Seriously?! :) That's amazing!  We are just so frustrated and tired and worried about our little guy- we are starting the Nutramigen tomorrow morning and I pray we have results like you did, thank you for sharing your experience :)

  • My DD has the same exact problem.  She turns 8 weeks tomorrow.  She is on Prevacid for reflux and nutramigen.  In my experience the nutramigen did not help with reflux.  My pedi told me to add 1 tsp rice cereal for ever ounce of formula.  This has helped tremendously!  GL!
  • this happen to me and i switch to similac advance formula. my son didn't like the taste of nutramigen and he also had less spit up with similac. it will take about a week to see a difference but i promise it will help. i also switch to dr. brown bottles and now my baby is doing 10 thousand times better! i never thought i would say that bc he suffered so much. good luck
