Cloth Diapering

Side sleeping infant and leaky diapers!

Hopefully someone can help me since I'm just about to lose my mind :)

My 7 week old sleeps sooo much better on his side than his back at night, but whenever we place him on his side he leaks completely out of his diaper by the next time that he wakes (which was every two hours last night).  We went through about 3 or 4 outfits, swaddles, and sheets.  Ah!!!

What do you think could help?  He NEVER leaks through his diapers during the day or when he is on his back and I've checked the leg openings and there is no gap.  Last night we used Bumgenius 4.0's and used a disposable once (hey...I was desperate).  I even tried adding more absorbency to them, but it didn't seem to help.  The insert was wet on one side, but the rest just ran out the leg.  I don't think it could be a repelling problem because my diapers are only a month or so old and we've used nothing but Rockin Green to wash.

I'm wondering if I need to be using wool longies with prefolds.  Let me know what you have experienced and what worked.  Thanks!

  • I don't have anything helpful to add, but I have the same problem with my 8.5 month old. She has recently taken to side sleeping and seems to leak often now.

  • From what I've read wool seems to be the only fix to problems like these.  I've read that people will even use wool over their pockets, so you don't have to buy other diapers.  Good luck!

  • Thanks so much!  I know that I've read about wool before, but didn't really understand what all the hype was about.  I think I'll look further into wool.  Thanks! :)

  • we had that problem when we were using pockets overnight.  since switching to fitteds and wool we've had no issues.

  • The problem is for most fabrics you need a bit of pressure to get it to soak up quick. If it takes too long you'll get runoff. That's why BG says you can't test for repelling without it being on a baby. When they are on their side you dong get that pressure on the absorbant zone. Fitteds or heavy stuffed pocket with wool is the only thing that's worked for us.
