Here's a question DH and I have been going over. If we use a two word first name (i.e. Mary Lou, Katie Jo, etc. but we've got a much better name than that) is it still alright to use a middle name?
I would still use a middle name. My sister has two first names (Danica Rae), and a middle (Annie). I call my kids by first and middle name all the time, so I'm a fan of the double first name.
I don't know what's up with my siggy and I am too lazy to figure it out.
If you do use a middle name with 2 word first name, I would hyphenate the first name, so it doesn't get separated into 1 first name and 2 middle names (or 1 first name, 1 middle name, and the real middle name dropped).
it seems like half of my friends are giving their LOs two middle names these days anyway. This is as good a reason as any to do so. I was really on a "Anna Leigh/Rose" kick for a little bit and was advised I could do Annaleigh/Annarose and then add a middle name. Perhaps that would work for your name choice?

I would. I knew a Leigh Anne who went by Leigh and she didn't have a separate middle name. But her first name was so commonly associated as being a compound name that it seemed kind of weird. Middle names are usually sort of secret. Like you find out and say, "Oh THAT's you middle name?" If your name is Leigh Anne and you say, "Oh, the Anne is just my middle name... it's a little boring, IMO. Sort of like not having a middle name at all.
It kind of depends on how you do it, though. Like my MIL's name was Mary Beth Last, but Beth was decidedly her middle (she's always just gone by Mary) even though it could be a compound first. (She has since dropped it and uses her maiden name as her middle.)
I guess I'm a little selfish about the name, but I guess it might be helpful to see if it works since it is not a "traditional" common name.
The first name would be Ila Rose. Both are significant sentimental family names and we like the way they wound together. Thought about Ilarose (one word) with a middle name, but it seems silly and trendy that way. Middle name would be Elizabeth if we chose to still use it - Ila Rose Elizabeth.

Wow - you all had some great thoughts - thanks!

Is Ila pronounced like Isla (Eye-la)? If so, I much prefer the 'Isla' spelling. Ila just looks strange and like you forgot the 'E' at the beginning.
I do like double first names and think having an additional middle name is just fine.
It is. Have to say I agree with you, but it is a family name and has been spelled that way for a couple generations, so Ila it will remain!
