Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Bleeding 4 weeks after D&C

I found out on February 14 via ultrasound that I had a blighted ovum. I went in for a D&C the next day. My follow-up appointment was last Tuesday, and since my bleeding was very minimal and I had no cramping, my Dr did not order bloodwork or an ultrasound.

Last night I went to bed with period like cramps. I woke up this morning to more cramping and extremely heavy bleeding.

Is it normal for bleeding to taper off then come back again like this?

Thanks ladies for your help, I really appreciate it :)

Re: Bleeding 4 weeks after D&C

  • You might want to call your doc just to make sure.  I stopped bleeding about a week after my D&C, but had some brown spotting.  Two weeks post D&C I had an episode of intense cramping that lasted for about an hour, passed a couple clots, and then bled for about a day.  Doc didn't seem concerned about this.  However, four weeks after the D&C it may be your period...?

  • thanks so much for responding :) I was scared to call my doctor because I thought maybe I was worrying for no reason! I just got off the phone with the nurse and she is going to talk to my doctor and then call me back- we'll see what she says! thanks again!
  • I'm thinking it might be your period too. Ive heard a lot of people having really bad first periods after a miscarriage, so it could definately be that. If it starts getting really bad like filling up a pad fast you probably should call your dr just to make sure.

  • I had the smallest amount of blood the day of my D&C, then nothing for 4 days...then I started bleeding and it last for 12 days...looks like today it's finally stopped (although the last few days was very light).  My f/u appointment isn't until 3/31 which is 5 weeks after my procedure, so I really don't have a whole lot of answers other than my Dr told me 2 weeks of bleeding after is normal for some.

  • We have very similar timing. I had my D&C on February 14th. I didn't bleed the first few days after, but then bled for about 11 days and then it stopped. Today I woke up with cramps and what I assume is my period (4 weeks to the day after my D&C). I hope it's your period, too - and that you can move on with your cycles. GL!

  • Thanks so much ladies, you have all made me feel so much better! I'm hoping this is my period too, and that it is not still bleeding from the miscarriage. I almost lost it when I saw so much blood this morning- I want to try and move on after the miscarriage and bleeding heavily just makes it worse. Here's to hoping today is the start of my cycle! • Ugh- I'm sorry!  My sister in law bled for 4 weeks and her doctors weren't concerned...(maybe that will help you not worry)

I bled for 17 days and I was ready to shoot someone by the end of it....  my doctor ended up calling me b/c I cancelled my follow up appt and asked why I hadn't called her about it.  I told her it was because it wasn't extremely heavy (my doc calls heaving a pad and hour continuously), and she agreed that there wasn't much to worry about... everyone is different).

I'd also suggest calling your doctor.

Seperately, I posted on my day 14 of bleeding (I was getting... "frustrated"... in "that" way) and I'll pass on my favorite response to you:

    Good luck!

  • I too might suggest your period. I got my pd 5 weeks after my first m/c, and with 4 weeks being a normal cycle length, it could be that if you have normal cycle lengths.

  • UPDATE:

The nurse called me back and said I needed to come in TODAY for bloodwork and an ultrasound. I was just heading out the door for work so I asked if it would be okay if I came in tomorrow instead. She said she needed to check with the doctor to see if that was okay (she was delivering a baby at the time) and then call me back. It is 4 hours later and she hasn't called yet. My husband wants me to call back but I got SO upset when she told me I needed to come in. I was hoping for the nurse to tell me that was normal or that it was probably my period and not to worry about it. The thought of going back into the doctor right now just scares me to death because every time I walk in that door I think about what happened there and then I see all the pregnant women who are there for routine check-ups and it makes me sad I'm not one of them. At this point, I'm hoping my doctor forgets and doesn't call me back because I really just want to stay home. Horrible, I know.
