anyone ever gotten an x-ray done while pregnant?

so as some of you know, i fell down the stairs yesterday and hurt my thumb (amongst other things). I thought at first it was just sprained but work wants me to get it checked out just in case (I fell on work property). The doctor wants to send me to get it xrayed, I told them I was pregnant and they said they would check to see if that was ok or not so I'm just waiting to hear back... anyone had this done while pregnant? I'm thinking because its just my hand it will probably be ok?

  • hmm not sure. they wont do xrays at the dentist when you are pregnant. My friend's son had to get xrays done to check for pneumonia and she wasnt allowed to go back in the room with him because she's pregnant. i'd check with your OB

  • My doctor said not to get them at the dentist unless it was absolutely necessary. If it was, they needed to put 3 lead covers over the belly region instead of the regular 1. Maybe they can do the same for you.

  • I had to go to the ER at 14 weeks for a possible pulmonary embolism.  They not only did a chest x-ray but they did a nuclear imaging scan (safer than a CT).  They just doubled me up on led aprons etc.

It was necessary because the embolism could have been life threatening.. They take the precautions they can!

  • I have had 2 xrays.  The first one was to check placement of my PICC and the second one was the next day to double check the placement of it.  I had to go to the ER because of heart palpitations.  They just doubled up on the lead aprons.

  • I work in xray and it is absolutely fine to get a finger xray while pg,, esp at this stage of gestation.  I am in the room during xray procedures often and wouldn't think twice about it, I know I am perfectly safe as long as I am safe about it.

I am guessing they might give you two lead aprons to wear but with the tiny amount of radiation you would get from a finger or hand xray, you really get more than that from being in the sun. I'd get your hand or finger checked out to make sure further damage isn't being done.

  • I have an xray license and we take every precaution possible.  The amount of radiation exposure for a thumb xray is minimal.  With that being said, we would still shield you with a lead apron as a precaution.  In case any of you are interested, you receive more radiation flying in an airplane across country than you do when you receive a chest xray.
