Toddlers - what time is bedtime?

E and J have always gone to bed with no problem at 7:30 since 8 months.  In the last week both have started to have meltdowns in their cribs at bedtime that last for over an hour.  We took them out last night and they were both wide awake and playing until about 8:45.  We put them to bed at 9 and they went right to sleep.

9:00 seems late for a bedtime for them.  They were wide awake at 7 this morning so it is not like they are sleeping in to make up for it.

TIA

Re: Toddlers - what time is bedtime?

  • I would try 8pm because 9pm seems so late to me. Sunday the clocks go forward so I would try to get them down as early as possible because of this!

  • Our bed time is 7 pm and the boys are 18 months- you can always try 8 pm and try to slowly work your way down...although 8 pm IMO is not a huge deal IF they get up are well rested and happy. :)

  • Bennett has always been a night owl. We've tried to push his bedtime routine up so that he's on his own in bed by 8:30, but that doesn't happen very often. It's usually 9 or 9:30. Doesn't give us much time on our own :(

  • Our bedtime is still 7pm.  I'm not sure how its going to work out because with the clocks going forward, its still going to be light outside at that time soon. I guess we'll find out.

  • We have always done 7-7:30. I think about a year ago we pushed it back to 7:30. I have no plans on changing it anytime soon, but in the summer, it tends to get pushed to 8, or whenever it gets dark.

ours too...sometimes we push it to 7:30, but that is rare...the girls start to get crabby...

  • Since I am a SAHM and they don't have a specific time they need to get up in the morning we kind of settled on 8pm bedtime at that age. They went down at 8pm and slept until about 8-8:30am.

Right before turning 2 (22 months I think) they started getting up really early on me, like between 7 and 7:30am. So I pushed back their bedtime to 8:30 and eventually 9pm and then they started waking again between 8 and 8:30am. At about age 2, Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child says most kids require less overall sleep and bedtime usually gets pushed back a little bit.

Now at 2 1/2 they don't nap anymore, so bedtime has been put back to between 8 & 8:30pm. Before they dropped the nap they were not going to bed until like 9:30, so I have not really be that upset about them no longer napping because now bedtime is back to a reasonable hour. On days that they do fall asleep on the couch in the afternoon, they are up until 9:30 or 10pm. So it is kind of an adjustment thing to make it work.

  • Angie goes in at 8/8:30. She reads books and sings to herself etc for about 1/2 hour and then we shut her light at 9.
