Clean or trash- bath toys

So, DD#3 pooped in the bathtub last night and we didn't notice it right away. All her bath toys were in there. When this happens, do you clean the toys or do you just throw them out and start over? They include those letters that stick to the side of the bathtub and rubber type squirty toys.

How do you clean them if you do keep them?

Re: Clean or trash- bath toys

  • If you don't want to toss them all, I'd definitely toss any that squirt.  We actually don't even keep those anymore because of how gross they get inside.  I know DH would want to throw them all out, but if you want to keep any, I'd soak them in a bleach mixture.  I'm not sure about the foam letters.

  • I'd toss all squirt toys but soak the others in bleach water.

Toss the squirty ones, throw the rest in the dishwasher!

  • DS just did this recently.  He must have pooped right before I got him out and I didn't notice-it's a huge tub and we had bubbles and toys in it.  I found it the next day.  I tossed everything except things I could run through the diswasher-cups, DD#1's loofah type sponge, plastic book.  Anything else went in the garbage.  I just didn't have the time or energy to hand clean everything.   This is about the third time he's pooped in the tub this month.  The first two times, I cleaned most things, this time trash it was.
  • Bath toys are generally inexpensive, and a lot of them (like squirt toys) are breeding grounds for bacteria.  Because of these two factors, I'm all about tossing them.  I would probably bleach a plain, solid plastic cup, but things with holes and porous surfaces (like foam letters) would get tossed if they sat in potty water.

I would clean them...throw them all in the bathtub, fill it with about 2-3 inches of hot, hot water and a add a 1/2-1 cup of bleach. swish it around a few times and let it soak for 30 minutes or so and you should be good to go.

be sure to rinse and dry the toys as well!
