Cloth Diapering

cloth diapering decision

i am a stahm to my 7 month old dd. we are trying to cut monthly expenses and so i am considering switching to cloth diapers.  they just seem like a pain - having to do a load of laundry everyday, etc, but i admit that i definitely don't know much about the process.  i looked on jilliansdrawers.com, but i got confused and decided just to ask opinions from fellow bumpies!  any comments/experiences would be appreciated!  thanks!

  • Check out the FAQ at the top of the board, tons of good information there!

And it's not that much work, don't psych yourself out before you get started!

  • I am new to cloth diapering as well (diapering in general, for that matter- our first is due next week!) and although it seems a bit intimidating at first, I have found that the more I read and learn about it, the more confident I become. Definitely check out the FAQs page and just lurk for awhile on this board. Google is also your friend- lol! Good luck!
  • first misconception... is that you have to do laundry every day... that's wrong.

it depends on the individual person, but for me, i wash my dipes about every 4-5 days. my stash is large enough to last that long, and even though some momma's might cringe at letting them go that long, my washing system works great for me, and i don't have any stink or staining problems.

some people wash every 2, or 3 days.

i have only grobaby in my stash, 11 covers and 30 inserts and like i said, it works for me.

there's a ton of info out there, but once you start reading, you realize that it's pretty much all the same info.

good luck with your journey... it really is a lot of fun!

  • I just started to CD as well. It really is easy! I thought it would be tough or time consuming but it's really not. I would do lots of research on which diapers you might like the best. Maybe buy different kinds used to try them out before you invest in one kind then hate them. Women on here can be really helpful and will answer any question you might have.

  • I am fairly lazy... but also fairly cheap. I find that the extra 3 washes a week is no biggie... and for me totally worth the savings.  I BF and cloth diaper... that plus grandmas that like to spoil DD with clothes... means that so far raising my baby has cost me nothing or next to it.

  • For me, doing diaper laundry is NOTHING compared to regular laundry. No folding or sorting and it's easy to put away. I spend a few minutes stuffing a few pockets for day care, but it's literally a piece of cake.

My husband was on the fence about cloth diapers and he sounded a lot like your post. We visited some friends of ours who CD and got a look at their system. Once we saw it all broken down it was like a light bulb went on and we both saw exactly how it would work for us.

Listen to the stories about how mamas here make it work and you'll begin to get a picture of how your own system will work.
