Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Shoes at daycare?

My DS is 12.5 months and a full time walker but I never send him to daycare in shoes.  I still carry him to and from the car.  There is another girl in his room that is 14 months and wears shoes everyday.  It seems so uncomfortable to be in shoes all day.  I do pack shoes in his bag in case the weather is nice enough to go outside.  I'm just wondering what everyone else does.  Do you send your LO to daycare in shoes?

Re: Shoes at daycare?

  • At this point she wears shoes to and from daycare.  While there, she does not wear shoes unless they are going outside.

  • Dd wears shoes now at daycare because she visits the bigger kids room to play and I didn't want her little feet to get stomped on

  • I just barely started sending DS in shoes.  I would have waited even longer, but our daycare lady kept bugging me about it.  She said she couldn't let him go in certain areas of the house because he was slipping when it changed from carpet to tile.  I call BS on that because he has no problem with it in my house, his father's house, or my parents' house.  But I got sick of her constantly bringing it up, so I went and bought some for him.  He wears them to daycare and they come off the second we get home.
  • Ever since he started walking he's been in shoes at daycare.  He's at a center and there are so many people in and out his socks would be gross by the end of the day.  And they go outside or to the gym twice a day and the teachers would have to put shoes on them then.

  • I've always sent DS to daycare in shoes - even when he was an infant, he was in robeez and then when he became a walker, he wore his sneakers.

  • DS isn't quite walking yet and I don't send shoes.  The other kids are walking and I do fear them stepping on his fingers and toes with his shoes.  His socks are getting dirty from crawling around more so I should probably send the shoes more often.

  • I have always sent DD to daycare in shoes since she started walking at 15 months, but the house rule is to take shoes off before entering, so she never wears them in the home.

Really? This is a new one to me. Which state are you from?

  • I didn't start sending him in Robeez until it got cold.  Once he started walking full time, he started wearing shoes full time.

  • DD wore shoes to daycare even when she was little.  I don't have any idea why I did it, but she wears shoes in the house up till she puts on her pj's but we have hardwoods and she falls more often if she doesn't have her shoes on.  If she were still in the big daycare I would send her everyday with shoes on and they could take them on and off as needed.

  • At our school infants are not required to wear shoes, but once they leave the infant room shoes are required. We do consider robeez as shoes too.

  • I have a home day care and I make them remove their shoes when they come in.  They can wear slippers if they would like but no outdoor shoes.  My kids only where shoes when we leave the house.

  • DS's daycare requested that he wear shoes (and that was before he started walking, but he was over a year old).  They take the toddlers into this gymnasium area that has a concrete floor and he was slipping too much in just socks.  I told them I didn't want shoes on him all day, though he seems to have them on more and more now.  He loves wearing shoes.
  • My LO is in a class with some as much as 3 months older or so than he is. So sometime before he actually turned 1 (and was a walker) shoes were required for his class. He's perfectly fine in them. Doesn't even really try to pull them off.
  • Tegan's daycare requires that they wear shoes once they are walking, but I've been sending her shoes with her to daycare, ever since she started pulling to a stand (they'd only put them on her out at the playground). Now that she's starting to walk she wears her shoes all day. She doesn't seem to mind her shoes and she has two pairs of really flexible StrideRite shoes, that are her main daycare shoes (shoes for special occasions, typically come from Target).

If she went to an in-home daycare, I could see her keeping her shoes off for the majority of the day, but in the center I like her having her shoes on during the day. I do wish they'd take them off while she's napping, but I don't think that happens. Tegan walks best either barefoot or in her StrideRite shoes. She doesn't seem to be great at walking in socks and I definitely would, at least, want her in socks at daycare both because I want her feet to not get cold and just because of germs, etc.

  • DD is in a 12-17 month class and all the kids in her class wear shoes. Most wear sneakers, one wears Pedipeds all the time, and DD is really the only one that goes to school in different shoes all the time. But she has tons of shoes, too.

I work at the daycare, and most of the babies in the 6-12 month class wear shoes too, even though they don't walk and it's not required.

  • I sent DD to school in soft soled shoes once she started taking steps. They often took them off when they were inside, but they took her outside a lot and her socks were getting destroyed. Plus I wanted to have something to protect her little feet.

Even now, in the toddler room, they often take their shoes off while they are inside. I think it's a little odd, but whatever. I'm sure it's more comfrotable for them. Heck, I'd like to take my shoes off at work :)

  • My kids have always gone to daycare in shoes/boots (even before they walked) and also have indoor shoes to wear everyday.  Indoor shoes are required.

  • Yes.  He is 14 months.  He has been wearing shoes all winter (albeit pedipeds until he was really walking).  I though they'd help keep his feet warmer and get him used to shoes.  It worked.  My first two kids screamed the first time they were in hard toe shoes (beginning of fall) but not my third.  Our daycare has to be close toe shoes.

  • i always have them. it's important to try to teach them to have them on. i know he wears them when they take him on walks in the stroller or if he visits another room. In the playroom , he will take them off and they leave them off quite a bit but it is a good habit to have

  • DS is in the toddler room now and is required to wear hard soled shoes because they go outside every day.  When he was in the infant room we sent him in soft soled shoes (robeez knock-offs) mostly to keep his socks on

  • Owen goes to my mom's house but her whole house is hardwood and he was sliding so I sent a pair of slippers with the grips on the bottom. I still send him over in shoes though because he likes to play outside and they run errands sometimes.

  • My daycare requires that my DD wear shoes at daycare. I believe she wears them all the time, but I'm sure she takes them off for nap time, or when my DD likes to hide her shoes. Smile

  • In the 1 year old room they have to wear close toed shoes, they go outside to play every day.  She's obsessed with shoes though and always wants them on.
