Bloody Show vs. Spotting

Talk to me about the difference in your bloody show (if you've had one) and spotting after a cervical check. I've had my cervix checked three times and haven't had any spotting. Yesterday I started having this brown/pink creamy discharge. Just wondering your experiences.

Re: Bloody Show vs. Spotting

  • I haven't had any internals this time, but had some spotting this week a day after having sex and it was definitely different than my bloody show with DS (had that 2 days before going into labor).  The bloody show in my case was more substantial and kept on coming everytime I would go to the bathroom, while the spotting was mixed in with discharge kind of like how you are describing.  Of course it can vary a lot in pregnancies though and I will admit that I still got excited to see something even though it probably was nothing.

  • I don't know for sure but I think the bloody show is actually your mucous plug. Which I believe is pretty obvious to tell the difference from spotting.

  • My bloody show and mucus plug were distinctively different with the obvious difference being the blood and the mucus plug came before the bloody show.  I think you're right that they are pretty much the same thing, but bloody show is a better indictor of labor coming than just the mucus plug (which can be tinged brown or pink).  I will leave the other graphical descriptions of my experience out, but you get the idea, right?  :)

  • I'm almost positive I lost my mucous plug a few weeks ago... I mean, nothing like that has EVER came out of me. :)

I'm just unsure about this. It's been happening for over 24 hours and is what some of you are describing....hmm...

  • I had, what I thought was a lot of blood yesterday after my first internal. I called the advice nurse to ask what the difference was to this very question. She said if it was bright red and bleeding a lot a lot, then that was the bloody show concept. I thought spotting would be a lot lighter than what I had but it's now been about 23 hours and has calmed down. I think if it would have kept up still to tonight, I would have just called back to make sure. I really don't want to be one of those ladies who calls about every little thing but seriously, that was a lot of blood yesterday!

  • Bleeding after an internal would be considered bleeding or spotting.

Your mucus plug is a chunk of mucus that can come out weeks before labour and may or may not be streaked with blood.

Bloody show is the blood that comes out during the early stages of labour as your cervix starts dilating. It comes with contractions. With bloody show you will know that the contractions are real as opposed to really painful BH. But unless you are in early labour that blood is probably ``spotting.``

  • Geeze, this all so confusing and sounds the same to me...I can't wait to be a second time mom so all this will seem more familiar and less like foreign language 101.
