Anyone see MFM without referral from OB?

We have moved since having DS. So I have a new OB with this pregnancy. Had my u/s last week to r/o another ectopic and just saw the u/s tech and a nurse. Next appt - to meet this new OB - is at 10 weeks. I'm tempted to call the MFM practice and see when they could see me. Just in case there is a long wait or my new OB thinks she can handle twins herself. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. But if I don't like this OB and have to find a new one... WWYD? (I do not need a referral with my insurance)

Re: Anyone see MFM without referral from OB?

  • If you don't need a referral for insurance purposes and you don't like your current OB, I would go for setting up the MFM appointment. In a multiples pg, I think it can never hurt to see one and even if you don't initially see a peri, you may end up having to see one along the way in you pg, you just never know.

I only saw a peri/MFM and loved the care I got from my dr. and nurses. I saw one without referral while living abroad in the UK and then decided to continue seeing one when I transferred back to the US. I thankfully didn't have a complicated pg but it was nice being in the care of a specialist just in case.

  • I didn't need a referral for my insurance, so I booked first appt direct with MFM.  I knew I qualified based upon ton of health factors and age anyway.  Twins just were the icing on the cake.

  • We just moved and don't have an OB here, so I just called an MFM a friend referred me to. He does deliveries and will see us the whole pregnancy, and said he'd refer me to an OB for the future (post-pregnancy). One stop shopping!

  • I don't think I was referred.

I had a midwife initially and they sent me to the MFM office for the NT Scan since the MWs didn't do them at their office.  While at the NT scan they found that I as expecting multiples.  I think (it was a bit blurry) they just asked which Dr. I wanted to see from then on out and mentioned that I would likely become a private patient.  A private patient is where you don't have another OB or MW.  I called my MW and told her the news and she was shocked and wished me good luck.

  • I self-referred and only saw an MFM from 7 weeks on.  I'm lucky that my MFM colleagues actually take on patients and deliver them (instead of many who are mostly consultants).  Now I'm back to my reg OB (who I love).

  • I would just go right to the MFM.  Most likely you will see one later on anyways and I personally like the proactive nature of my practice vs. the stories from OB's I've heard with twins.  I feel like I get a lot more monitoring than an OB office would provide.

  • My MFM wouldn't see patients without a referral from an OB. They were swamped and wanted to weed out those that only thought they needed a peri. I'm glad they didn't allow self-referrals. I wouldn't have received the care I did if they had an even larger patient load.

I agree.  I only saw an MFM.  I had a consult with her before I got PG, because of MTHFR.  When I got PG unexpectedly, I didn't have a regular OB, so I asked if they would see me.  They agreed and at the first visit when they did a dating u/s, it was spontaneous twins.  It was serendipitous for sure.  I loved having a specialist and all the monitoring - my dr was always one step ahead.
