Who's had a double ear infection?

Hello ladies!  Just wondering how many of you have had to deal with double ear infections and how quickly your LO bounced back?  DS has had an ear infection for over a month now?it started in his left ear and now is in both ears.

We have been on 10 days of Amoxicillin, 10 days of Augmentin, and then we had a shot of Rocephin along with 5 days of another antibiotic that started with a C??  That still didn?t help and now we are on our second day of getting the Rocephin shot, 3rd one tomorrow.  Our doc said if tomorrow the ears still look bad we will have to go to the ENT doc and they will probably either drain the ears or put tubes in.

I guess my question is, how many of you have dealt with several diff. antibiotics and what finally worked?  I know I have read many other posts about others in this situation, I just feel helpless that I can?t do anything to help my lil guy feel better?.

TIA!

  • Oh man I'm so sry ! My little one had croup and that led to a double ear infection. We are day 5 of amoxycillion. We go back to the doc in 5 days to see if it helped ! Hope your little one feels better!

  • Sorry to hear he's not responding well to the antibiotics.  We had back-to-back ear infections.  It started in his left ear, they gave amoxicillin (10 days) and it cleared up for about 2 weeks.  Then he got a double ear infection and they gave zithromax.  Apparently zithromax is a 5 day antibiotic but it works for 10 days.  That was at the beginning of February and it hasn't come back yet.  Good luck.  Its so hard having a LO that's not feeling well.  Ear infections are the worst!!

  • We had to do the amoxicillan and rocephrin shots and the infections would go away and then come back like 2-3 days later. Hate to say it but DS got tubes and hasnt had an ear infection yet *knock on wood* He had an almost constant ear infection all of December and January as well as about 6 ear infections before that and he finally got tubes on Feb 2nd and he has been good all month!

I honestly would rather do the tubes (the procedure is literally 10 minutes if that--easiest surgery DS has had to date)! For DS being on all those antibiotics really did a number to his digestive system and I honestly believe his 2 stomach bugs (that both lasted 1 week) were b/c he was on antibiotics and had no good bacteria to help fight off the bad. I am sure he would have gotten the stomach bugs regardless but the antibiotics sure didnt help AND they werent getting rid of the infections. I would request a referral for an ENT even if his current infection clears up.

  • Thank you everyone!  I have made an appt already with the ENT just in case, as both DH and I had bad sinus / ears growing up.  Figured we might as well get to know them now...hopefully DS gets better soon and stays healthy but if not guess we will be meeting the ENT this week instead of next!

Thanks for all the feedback, knowing the tubes will be an easy procedure makes me feel better IF we have to go that route!

  • Ugh!!  We're currently dealing with a double ear infection.  DD was on augmentin for 10 days, we went back for a recheck only to find her temp was 101.8 and her ears were still infected!  So, now we're on to 10 days of Ceftin.  During the Augmentin, she developed a horrific diaper rash, so fingers crossed we don't get that again.  We've started probiotics this time.  I don't know why no one told me about that before!

GL with your LO's ear infections!  We are also waiting to see how this one clears up which decides if we go to an ENT Dr. or not.

Oh man, sorry to hear this!  Ceftin is the other one we were on, Ry lasted 5 days and got really sick again so now we are doing the series of 3 shots.  Good luck to you!  Hopefully the probiotics help, we have been lucky so far with that part of it!

    Good luck to you too!

I am sure someone else can explain the probiotics better than this, but the short story is the antibiotics will kill all bacteria in their system (even the good bacteria needed).  This can cause alot of tummy issues, etc.  So the docs suggest giving eiither yogurt with probiotics or just probiotics mixed in their food daily to help regulate that and put the "good" bacteria back into their system....

  • At 5 months he had a double ear infection. He was fussy and his fever shot up really high. It would drop down with tylenol and then shoot back up as it wore off so we took him to the pedi. He put him on antibiotics and he was much better within a day.

  • My DS1 had constant ear infections over the few months prior to his 2nd birthday.  He went through 3 different antibiotics (amoxicillin, augmentin, and another one, plus the rocephin shot).  He was scheduled to have eye surgery in april, and after seeing the ENT doctor, he also had tubes placed and his atnoids removed.  Then his pedi brought up a concern about his tonsils at his pre-op appt, and the day of surgery we decided to have the tonsils removed as well.  But back to your original question, I don't remember which one worked really but it did finally go away.  And since he had the tubes, he hardly had any ear infections.  The few times he did, then he got ear drops, which are much more effective (you can only get the antibiotic ear drops if you have ear tubes).
