Babies: 0 - 3 Months

2 1/2 months old with a 101.2 temp - I'm worried

I'm going to contact his doctor in the morning, but I am SO worried right now.  I recall being told that I shouldn't be concerned with his temp unless it's 103 or 104.  Well, I'm concerned and won't sleep at all tonight.  Wondering if I should take him to the ER.  Crying

  • Our pediatrician has a 24 hour call line. If I were you I'd try to call the pedi office and ask.

  • I would be worried and wouldn't be able to sleep. Follow your instincts! Are there any other symptoms that can help you?

  • He's been sick for about a week with a cold.  Coughing with chest/nose congestion.  No fever until today.  He's been sleeping most of the day just waking to eat really.

    I would take him. Now.

My doc gave us 100.4 as the cut off.

I may have spoken a little too soon- I think immediate attention is necessary in infants 6 weeks or younger.  Dr.Sears' site said this about older infants:

"Infants age 7 weeks to three months with a fever over 101 warrant an appointment with your doctor within the next several hours. You generally don?t need to page your doctor in the middle of the night in this situation if the office opens within the next few hours. Simply follow our recommendations on treating fever below and call your doctor in the morning. If it is the early evening you should probably page your doctor, since the office won?t be open until the following day. Be sure to confirm any fevers with a rectal thermometer (if available) before contacting your doctor."

Still, I'd try to call the after hours line ASAP.

    Thank you!

  • This happened to use 2 weeks ago. DS was a few days under 2 months and and he had 101.4 (he also had a cold that DD gave to him). I called the oncall number (it was 8pm) and he said protocol was to go to ER. I'm a PA at the children's hospital, so I know they would rule out sepsis, which required a spinal tap. I told him I didn't want to put him through that if necessary and asked if we could stay home. He agreed as long as his temps were not rising and he wasn't wheezing. We did go in the AM and got blood work which was normal. That next day the fever resolved so I'm sooo glad we didn't go in. At his 2 month appt a few days later, he said that after 2 months, the cut off is 102, but to call if it does get that high. Good luck!
