Can someone explain this to me?

Can anyone explain why it just took me  an hour trying to explain to SIL that she could not pick DD up with out her "thingy" (her words for car base). I tried to explain that it is not safe to just strap her in. Then she followed up with "well Bill (her husband) will be home soon, what if I just hold her carrier?" WTH?? IT"S NOT SAFE, besides ILLEGAL! I don't think I should have to explain to a 32 y/o woman this. Grr, it makes me so mad at how dumb some people can be. I dont understand her logic behind it. If the car seat isn't meant to be held in with seat belts, and only a car base, you need the base! grr..sorry, i'm so frustrated, that took way longer than it should have. USe your head woman! YOu're not putting my sweet angel in harms way because you were "really looking foward to babysitting." When I told you to get the base out of your parents car, you should have. Problem eliminated, you would be babysitting.

I'm getting kind of lost in your post.... Are you venting about your SIL taking your child somewhere in the car without a car seat base and that it's illegal without the base? Because if that is so, I am screwed since I put my LOs car seat in vehicles all the time without a base and only using the seat belt.

I see how it is confusing. I meant that it is unsafe and illegal to hold a baby carrier in the passenger seat while someone else drives.

Most car seats can be used in the car without the base. They have instructions in the manual for both instances - in case you would ever be without your car seat base for some reason. As long as the car seat is strapped in properly with the seat belt, there's no issue. It's recommended and safest to use the base, but one short trip without (following proper instructions of course) should be fine.
