I read that sleeping on their tummies prevents their startle reflex from waking them. Unfortunately that's one of the reasons it's dangerous since that's what can bring them out of apneic episodes in the night.
I know what you mean! When I was a baby that was never a rule. My mom said she only put me and my siblings on our bellys to sleep.I let my daughter sleep on her stomach for naps but I'm always awake and check on her often.

When I posted about DD sleeping on her tummy, I got a bunch of negative comments. I'm glad to see that other people are just happy that their baby is happy. I would love it if DD would sleep on her back, but she only does that for short periods and only if swaddled. PP mentioned sleeping on tummy stops startle reflex... so does a swaddle. I just want my baby to be happy and healthy so right now she's sleeping on her tummy on my tummy.

I'm happy your baby is happy. Do what you want. I'm just sharing the info because I had no idea why it was considedered less safe before I read that. Swaddling isn't the same. There is less resistance in a blanket than a mattress so they can still startle without waking themselves by smacking their own face or body.
DS is napping on his tummy right now in the PNP. He is going through his 6 wk growth spurt and hasnt slept well in a couple days and this was the only way he would go down. I am a nervous wreck! But its just a nap and I am right here watching him.

My baby will only sleep on his tummy. He doesn't like to be swaddled and he gets startled while on his back, etc... The rule of sleeping on the back wasn't around when we were born and I've already raised two kids that slept on their tummys. I say, to each his own. Do what you think is best for you and your child.

This. DS hit his first growth spurt early and now this one too, and the poor kid just won't fall asleep unless he's on his tummy or side. When myself of DH is with him I don't mind either, but at night, I don't trust it. DS just started figuring out how to roll onto his side, so I can't make him sleep on his back forever. (hates being sawddled; only tolerates it a few days a week) I'm seriously considering buying a co-sleeper since he sleeps best near one of us. Also, so we can keep a better eye on him without getting out of bed, as lazy as that sounds...

dont feel bad. My ds is also a tummy sleeper. He has reflux and the only way he was ever comfortable was on his side, then he started to shimmy himself onto his tummy. Now we lay him on his tummy to sleep. Thats the only way he stays asleep. If its on his back or even side now, he sleeps for only 10 min at a time no matter what. Do what works for you and your baby!
