exposure to shingles?

FIL has shingles. He was diagnosed last weds and was told not to return to work until this tuesday.  I am planning a quick trip home for a visit, I am staying with my parents but since FIL has not seen ds since his birth I wasn't sure if I should take the baby over.  I would assume as long as he has no active open sores it's ok but it still makes me nervous with a newborn who has not had shots yet.

I don't want to hurt his feelings though if he assures me he's OK and I still don't feel comfortable.  I called the pedi and waiting on a call back.

what would you do?

Re: exposure to shingles?

  • I'd wait and see what the pedi says. If she says there is a chance of infection I wouldn't. I mean the kid is going to get them sometime but if you can avoid it now I would.

  • I wouldn't go.  Chicken pox is dangerous for an infant.  If you go FIL can't touch LO anyway so why go at all?
I give up trying to get a ticker.  I have a DD that is 2.5 years old and is awesome.  Maybe I'll add a quote to distinguish myself.  Hmmm.  How about...

  • Nick had the shingles when Elle was six weeks old.  We were told to keep him away from her almsot two weeks.  Since your FIL was cleared for work he is likely not contageous; however, I would probably still keep DS2 away.

  • My mother was diagnosed with shingles about two weeks ago and we got conflicting information from her doctor and the peditrician.  Her dr. told her that she should not be around the baby until the rash was gone because it was too risky.  But the ped. said that as long as the sores were covered (the rash was on her back), it was fine.  I wasn't sure why we got conflicting information, but we decided better safe than sorry and so my mom stayed away until it cleared up.

  • DH had shingles when our LO was six weeks. We called the pedi and his doctor and both said that as long as he did not touch the baby with his bare hand (that had lesions) we would be OK.

The only way LO could get chickenpox, we were told, was if he had direct contact with the lesions and if they were gushing out. So we did as we were told and everyone was fine.

  • My grandma stayed with us a day and the next day she called and told me she had shingles.  I freaked out and she felt bad.  The pedi told me that as long as DD didn't touch an open sore she would be fine.  I was also told that DD was covered under my immunity for the first 6 months and since I had chicken pox she would be fine.  That was a week and 2 days ago and DD is still doing fine.
