DS is being tested for whooping cough

DS has had this horrible cough for six weeks now that has caused him to loose his breath, turn red, vomit a few times, choke, etc.  Any type of running or exertion causes him to have a coughing "fit."  Along with this cough he has had ear pain, a low grade fever off and on, and a sinus infection.  We've actually been to the pedi 2 times before today...first for what was diagnosed as the sinus infection and the second was for an ear check.  They put him on antibiotics and he finished that last Wednesday.

Last night he woke up about an hour after putting him to bed saying that his ear hurt, he was coughing so much that he started choking and was crying, etc.  So I took him this morning to the pedi...she heard him coughing in the exam room and said she thought she heard a "whoop" and said that all the symptoms he has and has had (ear pain, sinusy, etc.) are part and parcel of whooping cough.  We'll find out tomorrow if he does or doesn't, but she did say that some kids get it even if they've been vaccinated.

They are putting him on another antibiotic and possibly a steroid if the test comes back positive.

  • CONFESSION: This is exactly why I want to throttle anti-vax parents. Their (non)actions are weakening the herd immunity for everyone else.

I hope your DS is feeling better, soon!

I just went through this exactly in class with my students!

I hope your DS feels better soon, whooping cough is definitely a tough bug on kids.

  • That sounds so awful for him and for you to have to watch. I hope he feels better quickly.
  • Aw, the poor kiddo.  He must feel absolutely miserable.  I know how bad I feel when my head is stopped up and I can't stop coughing.  :(

I hope they get to the bottom of what is causing it, and find the right meds to treat it.
