When Zofran doesn't work...have you tried Metoclopramide?

Zofran doesn't help at all... but have any of you tried metoclopramide?  My sister started using it and she is doing SOOOO much better.

When looking it up online, one site says it's not proven in pregnancy, but everything else says it's safe and widely used.

Anyone try it?  Does it work?

  • Reglan (or metoclopramide) is the first thing my Ob's office tries you on for morning sickness.  It didn't work for me but I have hyperemesis and not just morning sickness.  When it was prescribed for me I asked about it on here.  There weren't too many responses so I don't think it is that widely prescribed.  I think most doctor's go with zofran.  I am glad it worked for your sister.

  • Yes!  Zofran didn't work for me at all...still kept getting sick and I had lots of severe side effects with it.  The M drug has been working for me pretty well.  I have still gotten sick a couple of times but nothing like with Zofran & there haven't been any weird side effects.  yay!

    So, yep...for me...it's worked.

  • I might have to look into that.  Zofran is giving me aweful headaches but I can't function without it.

  • When all of you talked about Zofran all the time, I was so confused. The metoclopramide is what they first prescribed for me, and it works wonders. I say in about 15 minutes, any bouts of nausea are gone. It's getting through the gagging to make it stay down that's the problem.

  • When Zofran didn't work for me, they offered me phenergan instead.  I fulfilled the prescription but haven't taken it.  I've stuck with the 25mg of Benadryl at night (others use Unisom 1/2 tablet) and the B6 pills.  That seems to do the trick so that I'm not sick all day -- it has diphenhydramine in it, which helps with motion sickness, among other things.  I am still sick first thing in the morning (usually shower or movement related), but I can deal with that compared to the first 8 weeks of constant vomiting.

The Zofran (in meltaway form) did nothing for me, however, the IV of Zofran worked immediately when I was in the ER.   Not sure what the difference is there...
