I never thought about it since my girls are always babbling, but was wondering if this is normal that they don't say true words other than "bah" (for "Bath", "book" or their sippies), "dada" and "mama".They point to things and babble and can bring me stuff that I ask (i.e. "bring mommy the book") but still no distinct vocab. They are 15 mo.
When did LO's start using clear words? I know every child develops at a different rate but just wondering what the norm is for language development.
Thanks.
Re: How many words at 15 mo.?
Our Mary (13.5 months) has said "poo-poo dy-pa" while pointing to her diaper. She tries to imitate a lot of words and points a lot, but not many clear words other than that.
Grace will say "poo-poo", but doesn't really care about trying to say much else!
I recently taught them the sign for "milk"... I may try to teach them more just in case they do have a delay, because our 2.5 y/o is behind what our oldest was saying at his age and I think it would have helped him to have signs.
Our oldest was already saying things like "dappadaw" for applesauce when he was 15 months. We have seen a WIDE range of vocal skills in our kids ; )
Mine are 16 months and we just got back from the Dr.
He said at this age 5-10 words are normal. I thought "wow", "uh-oh", "mama", "dada" didn't really count as words, but they do...and that's about all my guys say (and "gracias" for thank you). So I wouldn't worry!
Mine still aren't talking. They understand everything and follow directions well....I'm not too worried yet. But I DO wish people would quit going "oh...they aren't talking yet?" Grrr...
I brought it up at my pedi appt last month and she wasn't at all concerned
