receiving blankets

I keep going back and forth on this.  How many did you register for?  Keeping in mind that we're having summer babies....did you look for non-flannel blankets?  I am on the "what's new" section of BRU and the new things just look different, so they are catching my eye.

My sister said one pack, other sister said none (people will buy them anyway), our friends said SEVERAL packs, etc.

For those who are CDing, do you have plans to cut up receiving blankets for use as liners/inserts or wipes?

Re: receiving blankets

  • i've gotten pretty mixed messages on this too. I think its another one o those "every parent and every baby is different" things. Most seem to agree that reg receiving blankets are too small for swaddling after the first week or two, but lots say they make good burp cloths. Not super absorbent, but they cover the whole baby and your lap, so you don't both end up covered in spitup.

  • I registered for one pack of four; I assume it's one of those things, like clothes, that you'll get whether you register for them or not. Baby Bargains praises the multiple functions of receiving blankets and recommends having a lot on hand.

  • I found that having alot of receiving blankets is just helpful. Particulaly for the summer babies since they might need a light blanket over them (in the car, etc) but nothing heavy due to the heat. Consider that you will be going to (if not living in) places with air conditioning. One in the diaper bag, one in the car, was always nice. I would register for 2 packs and just open one for now. You can always return them. I used 2 packs and we used them for a really long time with DS.

  • I also love the aden & anais muslim blankets for the summer!  They are huge so it's great for swaddling and BF'ing and nice and light...  I got mine at target but you can order all different ones on their website too!
  • I registered for one pack.

I figured people would just buy them regardless of what I register for. I didn't want a ton, so I only registered for one pack. I think it had maybe 4 in it?

  • So....the six packs I registered for....too many?  :-)  I can't decide on just one, they are all so cute!

My sister recommended the Swaddle Designs brand b/c they are a true square and swaddle better.  Those only come in singles, and are $25ish.  I put two of those on.  I also found a pack of Summer brand muslin blankets.  Those come 3 to a pack, and are the same $25.  (Description does not give their size, but I thought the muslin would be nice in the summer?)  So one of those went on.  Then I have THREE of the typical flannel 3-packs - I can't decide which one I like best!  If I add just one of those, is that too many still?

We do have central AC but we just moved into this house in December - not sure if or how much we will use it.  But that is a good point.  And a good question to ask for daycare.

    Thank you!!

This.  The Muslim blankets are the best.  They are super lightweight and yet offer the same benefits of regular receiving blankets.

  • To be honest, I have no idea what a receiving blanket is or what it's supposed to be used for.  How are they different from a regular old blanket or a swaddler??  I hate how baby stuff has all these odd names - like people are trying to make it sound fancy.

The Aden & Anais swaddlers are really nice.  Some friends have some.  They are very lightweight - made of muslin - so perfect for summer.  I plan on getting a 4 pack of those but I'm sure I'll get some other blankets as well at my shower.

  • We registered for one pack of receiving and then a really cute fleece one.  I figured people will buy blankets and even though it will be summer, I'm sure we'll still need some.

I have heard and read great things about the Aden & Anais swaddle blankets.  They are very thin gauze like material and would probably be great for summer.

  • i bought one pack of recieving blankets and got another as a gift (the flannel kind), and the only thing i've ever used them for is as a light cover during the summer.

one pack didn't even get opened. totally depends on what you're going to be using them for. if you're going to swaddle all the time, then maybe you might need a lot in case they get pooed on, or spit up on. but other than that this is a meh item...

  • I have the muslin ones on my target registry (in a four pack) and a pack of cotton flannel on my BRU registry.  I also have a swaddle-me blanket on each registry.  Blankets are cutesy things that people like to buy regardless (like clothes) so I'm sure I'll end up with plenty.

  • Can't recall how many we had but we used them for a long time (months).  My first two babies were born in December and September so June will be different for sure.  I was able to use standard square flannel receiving blankets for swaddling and would put another blanket on top of them belly down to feet.  Many uses for them in my book, and inexpensive.  Throw on the floor to play on, use as a burp cloth, use to change diapers on in a pinch, provide a little privacy for nursing.

All of that said, if you are having a shower, you will get blankets galore.  It's something that people are drawn to buy, so cute and practical..

I hadn't thought of cutting them to use as diaper wipes, good idea.  Thanks.
