Cloth Diapering

Do you think a Fluffy Bum hinders/makes harder early movement?

Just a random question.  When on her tummy DD just lays there, I think it is hard for her to get her chest and head up balancing on a fluffy bum.  She is a lot better on my chest at an angle.  I was also wondering if it was harder or take longer for them to learn how to roll over, her diaper does weigh more than a sposie and alot more bulky. Did any of you find this with your LOs?  I was just curious.

  • I worried about this with our LO at first as well, but he's really strong and healthy and has progressed really well.  Their bums are definitely bigger than in sposies, but our pedi never said that CD'ing affected our DS or his progress.

  • I got my BFP and had my DD almost exactly a year before you Smile  We used disposables until 13.5 months so I can't really speak from experience but I have wondered the same thing.  DD is still slightly bow-legged (which should correct itself) but sometimes I worry about the bulkier cloth diapers exasperating the situation.

  • No. I read recently that CDs *might* delay some motor milestones by 2-4 weeks, but in the grand scheme of things that's within the normal range anyway. People have used CDs for years and their kids turned out fine.

Yeah I wasn't worried that it would effect her long term, just that she is taking a little longer to reach certain milestones that her friends her age have already reached as far as physical movement.

Friends her age? She's not even 3 months old. The only physical movement milestone that kids might reach at that age is rolling over, and most kids are NOT rolling over by 3 months old, regardless of the diaper on their butts.

Anyway, kids develop at their own pace. I did notice that DS (CD'ed from birth) hit many of his early physical milestones slightly later than DD (in disposables until 15 months old), and I worried that it might be the diapers. But in retrospect, I think it was just his personality. He's always been into being vertical, and so he wasn't so interested in rolling over, sitting up, and crawling (although he still hit all of those milestones easily within the typical age range), but when it came to standing up and walking, he was actually ahead of DD.

  • Not at all.  My little guy is right on track with movement.

  • Dd was a preemie and wears cds and has met all of her milestones within the 'normal' age range. I was cd and I was ahead with all of mine.

  • My mom was convinced it would have a negative effect on DD1's development.  It didn't.  She is 16 months old and has done everything right on time.

  • No, I don't worry. My DS has been hitting his milestones on time.

If it bothers you, give your LO naked butt time while she is doing tummy time.

  • I don't think so. DS was a roller by 3 months, and an unassisted sitter by 4.5 months, which I think was pretty early.

  • I don't think this is an issue at all.  DD was always right on or ahead on milestones.  I wouldn't worry!

  • DS started rolling at 5 weeks, so, no, don't think the fluff hindered him in the least :)
