Maryland Babies

Warning--1st timer question :)

This might sound dumb, but I keep reading that you shouldn't use powder anymore for babies because of the talc.  Is this true?  Or is this something I should just use with caution.

Re: Warning--1st timer question :)

  • I remember reading when Ava was a baby that they could breath the powder in and it's dangerous for them so we never used it.

Hopefully someone else will have a better explanation for you.

  • I took a mommy class at st joes and they did advise against it because they inhale some of it. not exactly sure the reason. i just dont based on what she said.

  • you shouldn't use talc; you can use cornstarch.

I used corstarch very occassionally when DD had a rash a few times.  The way diapers are designed now (very absorbent) you really shouldn't need to use much ointment or powder anyway.

I saw a Johnson and Johnson corn starch, I tried explaining what I had read to my mom and she couldn't believe you shouldn't use powder.  That makes sense now.  Thanks ladies :)

  • I had heard it was not advised to use b/c of irritating baby's lungs w/the dust, but nobody (drs/nurses at the hospital or our pedi) has ever said a word to us about using/not using it. Personally, we've never had a need for powder, so it hasn't been a concern for us.
  • also many rashes (especially yeast) feed on cornstarch (sugar) so you shouldn't use it all the time. I just let her air out before I put the new diaper on.

we have never used powder or rash cream and LO's behind is fine.

  • I never used it, in fact I have a huge unopened bottle from my first baby 4 years ago. I have heard the particles are too large for baby's lungs and it irritates it.

hmmmm - this is interesting, DD got a minor yeast infection rash on her neck folds when she was 2 or 3 months old, doctor told me to air dry it out as much as possible, but to put cornstarch powder on it to clear it up.  Worked like a charm and the rash was gone in a few days.

  • Talc is definitely a no-go.  I think that the only people who buy it are grandmothers who feel you have to have it.  My dad is a family physician and advises against it.  Not only can it cause respiratory issues, but it also can cause issues in the diaper region.

I was given a couple things of it in random gift baskets and donated most of it.  Of course the one thing that I didn't donate DD found and opened and made a huge mess with once while napping in her toddler bed.  It's stuff of facebook legend.

I think that even the cornstarch powder is something that you would rarely use and is one of those buy-only-if needed items.  Also you don't have to buy the J&J stuff you can just buy a box of regular cornstarch at the supermarket- which would be fragrance free, etc. since you use it for cooking.

  • The NICU nurse told us absolutely NO powder (talc & cornstarch) as it very bad for babies' developing lungs.  I am not sure if that is true for all babies or just preemies...

  • We use cornstarch, she's had some mean diaper rashes - mostly after starting solids, and its helped.  We've also put it in her little folds that were irratated from the hot weather.
