Cloth Diapering

please help, horrible rash, why????

I had my son in cds for the 1st time today, first a fuzzibunz, then a bumgenius, then a flip.  His bum looked great and rash free until I put on the flip with the organic flip insert.  We did have him in the diaper for a few hours and he did poo and pee a lot while we were out and I had no idea, so I am not sure how long he was sitting in it - I feel horrible about this.  Now we have him in a sposie which I never wanted to use again - do you think it was a reaction to the insert, the diaper, the fact that we didn't change him right away?  HELP

Re: please help, horrible rash, why????

  • It was probably from not changing him and the wet sitting against his skin. You can add a fleece liner and it will wick away the moisture so its not sitting against his bum. I normally add one in my organic diapers when I know he'll be in it a little longer, like overnight or when we're running errands.

  • Its probably just a reaction to being wet for a while and being in poo. The organic insert isn't "stay dry" so he will feel more wet with that than a BG or FB.

There was one time that DD pooped in her sleep and got a bad rash. It cleared up within a day just by using CD safe cream and changing extra often. I wouldn't jump back into sposies if it were me because those irritate my DD a lot. Just try some cream and changing often. You should be okay. :)

  • The flip organic insert is not "stay dry" so it could be from the wetness being on his skin for too long.  My dd is super sensitive and if she has a poopy diaper for more than a few minutes she gets red.

I would try to let him air it out as much as possible!  Don't get discouraged.  Just check him often and maybe put a fleece liner over anything that isn't "stay dry."

  • ladies, thank you so much for the replies, I never should have put the flip organic insert against his sensitive little bum, I feel horrible!!!  So should I just put this liner inside the pockets of other diapers from now on, or toss it since I know it caused the rash (combined with me slacking on changing him).
  • Honestly, I think it was the poop, and not the wetness. Poop (especially liquid baby poop) has digestive enzymes from the intestines in it. If it's left against the skin, it begins to "digest" that, which causes a rash.

We use prefolds a lot, which has no stay dry feeling, and wetness against her skin doesn't usually cuase a rash, bu we're always careful to change at the first sign of poop.

The liner is probably fine (once washed). Just make sure to watch for poop and change right away!

  • thanks for all of the replies, I usually change him the second he poos, but I missed it this timeCrying
  • Don't beat yourself up. Phantom poos happen. ;-)

    He's a real cutie, btw.

  • I wouldn't give up on the organic insert yet. I would assume the poop was most likely  the culprit and give the insert another try.

  • I also wouldn't give up on the diaper just yet.  I've used organic diapers that are not stay-dry and haven't had a problem.  I don't think the wetness caused the rash- it's more likely the fact that he pooped and was in it for a bit.  You can try putting a fleece liner in the organic diaper but again, I don't think wetness was the culprit.  Also- don't give up on cloth even though you are dealing with a rash- just put a liner between his bum and the diaper if you're using cream that isn't CD safe.
