Protein powder

Good Afternoon MoMs,

Has anyone taken protein shakes for increasing their protein intake?  If so, do you have any recommendations for a good tasting chocolate protein powder?  I'm really only interested in a chocolate flavor, no strawberry or fruity flavors.  Also, are all of them safe during pregnancy?  Can I just go to a GNC and buy a protein whey powder, similar to what someone would take if they were working out, or is there something specific that I should take?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Re: Protein powder

  • Yeah, I don't want to have to keep buying powders, only to not like them and throw them away, since they can be a bit pricey.

  • Not when I was pregnant...but right now we use muscle milk cake batter! It is delish. We even put It in a healthy pancake mix MH makes. Yum. I believe there is a regular and healthier version...

  • I use a brand from a local Ballard Market grocery store near me, so I don't think it's available in other areas, but I looked for one that was just whey powder with no sweeteners. My nutritionist said to make sure the Vitamin A in it was from beta-kerotene, or to choose one without Vitamin A, because you can get too much of it when you're taking a prenatal vitamin too. They had small samples at my grocery store, too - a supplement store might be more likely to hand out samples too.

I use the vanilla flavor and make a chocolate shake with it each day by adding chocolate ice cream (and also peanut butter) with the milk. It's a better chocolate flavor to me, adds some fat, and helps the consistency of the shake a lot. You could also add a chocolate syrup or cocoa powder to it. I can get 50 grams of protein in a 16-ounce shake.

  • I liked the Boost chocolate protein shakes. It wasn't powder, but little jugs you just get at the grocery store. I think it helped because my discordance between the twins went from 22% to 8% after I started introducing the drinks.

I did discuss it with my MFM before I started and she was the one who recommended the Boost drinks.

  • I use Ensure, but again this is not a powder.  I think they are more convenient and easier to use compared to the powder, but more expensive too.  My MFM also recommended Ensure or Boost to prevent TTTS. I buy them from BJ's in bulk, so they are not as expensive.
  • I drank a protein shake with chocolate powder, milk and a little vanilla ice cream every night for like 3 months lol- (we had a little scare with a weight discrepancy between our twins & I was trying desperately to bulk up baby A.. I think it helped). Anyway, I forget the specific brand but I got it from the Puritains Pride website- check it out- might be cheaper than GNC.
  • there was a study that came out recently that showed a lot of whey proteins having decent amounts of mercury and other heavy metals in them (above the allowed amount.) I remember the GNC brand was high on the list because that's what I used to drink.  I switched to "whey to go" because it had much lower levels.

(I didn't know that about vitamin A.  I'll check it out)  I mix it with this E7 shake I drink every morning and skim milk and it tastes pretty good to me.  I like the vanilla too because you can mix it in things like pancakes and add some protein to an other wise carb full meal

  • Abs diet Halley Berry shake is so good! it's peanut butter, strawberries, yogurt, milk and powder of your choice. The peanut butter was added protein in addition to the powder.

I drank the whey powder smoothies twice daily while I was pregnant. If you go to GNC I'm sure they can assist you. Good Luck!

  • I found a Soy Protein powder at the grocery store. The brand is Avia and its vanilla flavored. I sprinkle it on my cereal and in my yogurt, but it tastes good as a shake too. 19g of protein per serving.
