Cloth Diapering

Hanging dry or dryer?

I know people use both, but does line-drying keep your diapers in better shape longer?  The dryers seems so convenient, but I would line dry if that was the case.

Re: Hanging dry or dryer?

  • I line dry everything but inserts and cloth wipes.  I may even start line drying them but right now I don't have enough room!  I really want these diapers to last through multiple children.

  • I line dry whatever I can under the weather circumstances. If it's sunny and warm I line dry and if I need to, I toss it in the dryer to fluff for a few minutes after. If it's cold/rainy out then I put everything in the dryer (except pockets/pul covers) and dry on low heat with wool dryer balls and a big towel. I always hang up pocket shells or PUL covers no matter what. I can usually hang those inside if it's rainy out.

I figure the least amount of time in the dryer the better, but sometimes I need diapers and can't hang them out so I have been using the dryer more recently.

  • I machine dry the PUL the first time (something about "sealing" -- our FB didn't work at all until we did this!) and then I line dry afterward to help preserve it. I just got a drying rack and set it up in the basement for winter. When the weather gets better, I'll dry outside, and i"m due for a sunning, anyway.
  • I line-dry because it does help them stay in better shape AND the environmental reasons. At first I was only line-drying my pocket shells. Now, I have a rack big enough for my inserts and wipes, so I line dry it all. I dry a pocket on occasion in the dryer if I need one right then. Just be careful not to overdry the PUL if you decide to use the dryer.
