Baby Names

Your thoughts.

My husband and I have a super easy time picking our girl names.DD 1 is Brighton Elizabeth, so we like names that are uncommon, but not you-neek. :) anyway, for baby number 2 we are thinking for a girl, Harper Isabel. And for a boy we are thinking Manning Alexander. Dh is a super big Colts/Peyton Manning fan, and he wanted to use Peyton, but we're from Tennessee and every other kid is named Peyton, so that's where Manning comes from. Is it too made up? I am open to other suggestions as well so input is welcome!

Re: Your thoughts.

  • It isn't really my style.  Also I don't think I would want to name my child after a sports figure.  We're huge Green Bay Packers fans but I wouldn't name my child after a player on the team - that doesn't seem like a good enough connection.  And Manning does sound made up.

  • Harper Isabel is a beautiful name.  I'd go back to the drawing board on the boy name.  What about Alexander Peyton?
  • Loading the player...
  • I despise Peyton Manning, but I'm sure it's not clouding my judgement when I say Manning is too unique.

On a different note, Manning's MN is Williams. Williams is not a typical MN, so why not follow in suit, and give your LO Manning as a MN?

Alexander Manning sounds nice to me.

Harper Isabel is also nice.  But, it seems trendy when paired with Brighton.

  • I think if you really want to name your kid after Peyton Manning, you should do so in the MN. I don't think Manning makes a very good FN at all. I also kind of think "Colt" makes a better MN than "Manning" but I think both are kind of dorky (I'm actually a Colts fan as well).

Harper Isabel is ok. I think it goes really well with Brighton Elizabeth.

We are huge Packer fans, too!!  You don't wanna name your LO Curly?

  • Totally agree with the sports figure thing, I mean, what if he were involved in a scandal later on. I really hadn't thought about that.

  • Harper Isabel goes great with Brighton Elizabeth!

Manning is not good. I mean, people will call him Man. Hey Man, come here, man, etc. Not good!

Williams is Peyton Manning's middle name. Peyton Williams Manning. So, maybe you could name him William? Or, it may suit your other name choice better if you do another uncommon first name and William as the MN. Like....Ryker William or something of that nature.

  • Manning doesn't sound particularly pleasant to me to say. I'd definitely do a test run of a name like that. Go to the playground and practice saying it five thousand times. "Manning, pick up your room." "Manning, did you see that big red car?" "What do you think Manning wants for Christmas?" "Hi, my name is Manning." "Mom, this is my boyfriend Manning." "Did you take Manning to his doctor's appointment?" Go to a Starbucks and give your order as Manning.

(He's probably going to get a lot of "Manny?" as in "short for Manuel," also.)

There are a lot of names that sound good in theory but once you realize you have to use them on an actual CHILD they're a disaster.

  • Oh geez, I had never even thought of Manny as a nn either!

  • Maybe it's just me, but naming my child after a younger celebrity seems like a bad idea.  I mean, there's PLENTYof time for Payton Manning to screw up his career and life.  It's a harsh reality, but there's plenty of time for a giant scandal to come about, and many people might not see him as such a good guy anymore.  If someting negative did happen with him, soiling his name, would you then want your child named after him?  Disclaimer:  I am not a football fan at all, and I know nothing about Payton Manning, I'm just speaking generally about the celebrity population.

  • We live in the same city. :)

    Yes to Harper Isabel.

I hear that Peyton is pretty popular, but personally, I only know of 1 little Peyton. He's about 3 years old.

I don't care for Manning as a first name, but it actually kind of goes with Brighton, in my opinion.

  • First - I think Manning is a great name for a boy!  I grew up with a Manning (not from TN, or LA) and then in college I was friends with a Jane Manning (Manning is her MN and she goes by both).

Second - I LOVE Peyton Manning but my husband hates him (I'm a Colts fan, he's a NE fan).  He thought he would just wait at home until the baby was home - you know, get the phone call like in Lady and the Tramp? - that is, until I told him that if he misses the birth, he'll be welcoming home little Peyton Manning W**** regardless of boy or girl.

He's planning to attend the birth now :)

  • I have to agree w/the Manning comments. Also, there's also the thought that people might think your a Giants fan w/Eli!

I'd drop it and keep looking for a different. Honor their dad and name your little guy Archie!

  • I love Harper Isabel it's beautiful.  I don't like Manning as a first name at least, why not do Alexander Manning?

This.  I really like Harper Isabel though.

  • Are there any names from members of your family or friends that you could use instead?  There has to be someone you personally know that you'd like to honor before Peyton Manning.

  • I love Harper Isabel! It's absolutely lovely, and goes great with your first daughter's name. Great choice.

I do find Manning really....dumb. Not just the name, but the reason for using it. I wouldn't name a child after a sports star. It's just cheesy.

  • I would steer clear of Manning for the reasons mentioned in earlier posts.  Even though it's a bit cheesy, Colton might not be so bad.  Then you could use Cole or Colt as nicknames.  Also, Peyton Manning's middle name is Williams.  That gives you a more subtle option.

Other suggestions that go with Brighton - Hudson, Asher, Finnegan (Finn), Porter, Archer, Desmond (Desi), Sullivan (Sully), Holden, Everett (Rhett), Beckett (Beck), Griffin (Griff), Callan (Cal), Wilson (Will), Remington (Remy), Donovan, Lachlan (Locke), Sinclair, Killian, Kane, Harrison (Harris), Vaughn, Weston (West), Garrison (Gary), Maddox (Max), Grayson (Gray), Dawson, Keegan, Vincent (Vin), Jonathan (Jon), Dominic (Nic), Spencer (Spence), Preston, Garrett
