diarrhea and bad diaper rash.. need advice

My 15 mo old has a stomach bug - first time he ever really had diarrhea and even a diaper rash this bad. It started yesterday and we are over 24 hours in and it seems better but he still had another at 5:30PM.

He isn't eating well - I have him drinking water. Using soft wet paper towels instead of wipes and a lot of cream.

What do you feed LO when they are like this? He is hungry and wants to eat but he doesn't want any of this food. the only thing he will eat is yogurt.

Any advice from those with experience...

PS: I did contact the DR on call and she suggested BRAT and a few other typical things. But wanted to see what everyone else has had good luck with.

Re: diarrhea and bad diaper rash.. need advice

  • No dairy or acidic foods b/c the dairy can rot a rotton tummy and the acidic foods can be painful on a diaper rash.  Basically, the BRAT diet, chicken noodle soup, freezies, plums, crackers... very basic foods.

  • I don't have any advice about the diarrhea b/c DD has never had it that bad. But, Desitin night time works really well when she gets a bad diaper rash.

Also, my pedi has recommended pedialyte for vomiting, and I imagine it would help with hydrating him in this case as well.

GL, I hope he feels better soon!

  • aww im sorry your LO has a tummy ache! My LOs got diahreah for a day ro two not too long ago.  I def did brat diet and pedialyte.  for the rash my pedi suggested using monistat and petrolium jelly every other diaper change.  this seemed to help.  also i took LOs in the sink and let them soak thier hineys for a little in the middle of the day.

GL and i hope LOs feel better soon!

  • Thanks everyone. I have been trying the BRAT but he isnt very happy about it.

I will continue tomorrow to see how he is doing.

I tried the tub last night and he cried when I put him in there. I felt so bad b/c he loves the tub. He even had an accident in there. I felt terrible.

Today I had to rinse him off int he tub b/c he was so red and wouldn't lay down on the changing table.

I am hoping that it is getting out of him. He had less and less today. Yesterday was about every 2-3 hours or sometimes closer together.

  • LO is just getting over the stomach bug. We avoided dairy and gave her water and pedialite only.  She munched on bland things...like toast, puffs, mum mums, cheerios, jello and popsicles.  As for the rash - we use Buttpaste and it works well.

Good luck - stomach bugs are the worst :(  The more fluids the better!!

  • yea - DS hasn't had any dairy. Pedi said to stay away from it. I should have had DH get some puffs. we are out of them.

I am going to the store in the AM. I am also going to get some Jello. I thought I had some in the house.

  • Poor babe. I would try BRAT (i know they don't love it), maybe put some aveeno or other oatmeal type stuff in the bath to soothe his bootie, and buy some Triple Paste. It's pricey but seriously amazing-one step removed from prescription cream.

  • DS seems to always get a tummy bug, we feed him bland foods (crackers, bananas, applesauce, rice), Pedialyte only and no dairy. I used Triple Paste ointment, love it, seems to work the best and is unscented.

  • When my LO had that happen some one suggested to me to use A & D ointment and to put Desitin directly on top of the A&D. It works like a charm. I don't have any hints for stopping the upset tummy but I swear by A&D and then putting Desitin on top of that...it has worked every time from tummy bugs to antibiotics messing up DS's stomach for the diaper rash.

  • DD also has a really bad diaper rash right now and our go to remedy is mixing about a 1/4 cup of vasaline with a tablespoon of Maalox.  Mix it really well together and lather that on.  We also put desatin on top.

    Good luck with your babe!

  • Sounds exactly like what we just went through. For us, we have LO baths with baking soda and I found that putting aquaphor on the red booty healed it up soooo fast! GL

  • Once DD was placed on antibiotics and they gave her bad diarrhea and the worst diaper rash. Her butt looked so raw and it even had some cracking. I was worried about putting diaper ointment because of the cracking so I never used it. DD would scream bloody murder anytime I tried changing her diaper so instead if it was a wet diaper I would just have DH hold her over tub while I used a cup our that cleansing bottle they sent me home with after birth to rinse the area. Then I would pat dry and slather on vaseline. If it were diarrhea diaper we would do the same except that prior to rinsing I would use wet cotton balls to remove any feces from her skin gently. I would use more dabbing motions than strokes and I would sometimes use tiny amount of baby wash to make sure area was clean. It did take a while every diaper change but whatever it took to help ease her pain. Hope your LO gets through this soon!
