Infertility

a note about my WTF ... (long)

My apologies for perhaps not disclosing full information about my meeting and my impressions, and I apologize profusely if I stated anything that may offend anyone cycling at SIRM, CCRM, or undergoing any treatments that we discussed.

First of all, I go to a very large, institutional, educational facility, and as such they are moderately conservative. This approach is compatible with my and my husband's thinking and I really feel strongly that we have a good relationship with our RE. Overall, the clinic has policies and practices therapies that have been shown to be effective, and I know, not all of those policies and practices are universally agreed upon by the staff. However, it is the framework from which the clinic runs as to maintain consistency. I have no doubt that similar establishments have a like approach, even though each clinic will have differences in what their policies and practices are. Because of this, none of my RE's answers regarding alternative therapies surprised me, and why Patchen's meeting was so similar since she also goes to a large, institutional, educational facility.

On the other hand you have smaller more avant garde facilities like SIRM that have their own practices. I'm sure that a lot of established therapies have come from facilities like them because they do not operate under the strict confines and are, by default, more able to employ new therapies. By no means did my RE say that another facility was bogus, however, my clinic cannot adopt a therapy that has not been tested and confirmed. He also mentioned that when we go in for our consultation there is no doubt that we will hear very compelling argument supporting these alternative approaches.

What I understand is that there is no right or wrong, and we're faced with making decisions based on our own philosophy and way of thinking, and finding the place that will work with our decisions. We look forward to our second and third opinions to see what a different RE can say about our cycles and figuring out what works for the both of us.

So, I really hope that this information can encourage others to have a similar discussion with their RE and to question their own values. It was never my intention to push an approach or discourage others.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for your endless support!

I'll write up our DE discussion soon.

I was not offended cutie.  I have been annoyed by some other posts in the past (not yours).  I guess I just feel like everything we are doing was considered at one point controversial, un-tested and I'm sure to some crazy.  When Dr.'s at cornell pioneered mTESE and ICSI, many thought this was a great achievement, others thought it shouldn't be done because you didn't know long term s/e of it (using inferior sperm, the sperm being inserted and not loosing it's tail, etc).  Both of these procedures have helped countless couples who had no hope prior to their invention to become parents.

I agree cutie.  My clinic is not for everyone and while I had no issues with cornell while I was there, I am very happy I switched clinics.

I hope you and DH find some answers and come up with a great plan and most importantly get a BFsP!

Ultimately, the most important thing is that you trust that your RE is doing the best he/she can for you and that they are exploring every option at their disposal to help you.

    ((HUGS)) cutie

  • Oh hun, you don't have to apologize. I'm sure no one was offended...or at least I don't understand why anyone would be!

You have to do what is right for you..where it is right for you..when it is right for you..with the doctor that is right for you!

I'm glad everything was so thorough, though. Sounds like you got a lot of good information and I'm also interested to hear what the other opinions say.

Take care of yourself...we are all here for you and wanting nothing but the best for you!

  • Totally agree with everyone else. I was in no way offended. Everyone has different protocols and feels differently (even REs can't agree sometimes and this is their speciality!!!). I'm glad you have an RE you feel comfortable with as that is the most important thing!!! ((HUGS))
