I was supplementing BM with Gerber Good start before my milk came in and DS was so gassy and got a belly ache from it. We use Similac Advance or Enfamil. Of course every baby is different
when we were at the hospital I asked the nurses about it because I had some coupons and check from them (we were already having BF issues). They said they have it, but don't use it unless someone is adamant about it. When I asked why they said that they do not do the research and improve their products like Similac and Enfamil. So we are not using it unless the ped switches us which I highly doubt she will because she feels the same way.
I actually work for Nestle and for the record they do do research to improve their products. I started with Enfamil, believe it or not, since its what they gave me in the hospital. When I switched to the infant as opposed to the new born he got really sick. I switched to Nestle Good Start Gentle and he is doing beautifully.
I use Gerber and love it. I've tried Similac Advance, Enfamil, Similac Sensitive. Gerber was the last stop. Similac Advance and Enfamil made her so gassy she was very uncomfortable. The Similac Sensitive made it even worse. We switched to Gerber Good Start Gentle and she is happier. She is still gassy but doesn't seem to be in the pain she was before.
As for Gerber not doing the research, the government regulates formula. Each formula manufacturer must meet strict minimum nutritional standards. The same goes for generic formula.
