Using the microwave

do any of you use the microwave to heat up milk for your baby?I have a bottle warmer & that's what I have been using to warm up my breast milk. Some of my friends say that there is no difference between using the microwave & a bottle warmer.. What do you do & what do you think?

  • You should absolutely NOT use the microwave to heat up the milk.  It can unevenly heat it and cause it to have very hot spots.
  • Maybe heat up water in the microwave to use to heat the bottle in.

    My mom heated bottles in the micro for both me and my brother when we grew up, but now it's a no-no!

  • Just NO!

    I will heat up water in the microwave and put the bottle in that.

  • Per Kellymom.com ;

    Warming your milk: Heat water in a cup or other small container, then place container of milk in the water to warm. Do not place milk in boiling water. NEVER microwave human milk or heat it directly on the stove.

  • I have always heard that no you are not suppose to use a microwave to heat BM.  I don't really understand how the two are different.  I personally do not heat BM at all.  I take the next bottle out of the fridge and let it come to room temp leading up to his next feeding.  If I forget to take the bottle out then i will sometimes run it under warm water to take the chill off, but DS will drink pretty cool BM without complaint.

    Microwaving can destroy valuable nutrients that make BM so good for baby.

    Actually I did know this.  I was saying I am not sure how heat distribution is different with each method.

    Oh, gotchya.  I guess just because microwaving can cause those hotspots since it doesn't really heat evenly.

  • We use the premixed Similac formula that stores right in the fridge.  We do heat the formula up in the microwave for 20 seconds.  We used to put it in a cup to heat, then poured it into the bottle.  Now...we just stick the bottle right in the microwave. It isn't long enough to overheat.  We always shake it up and test it first.  Works just fine!!

  • our Emerson microwave has a "baby milk" button on it. it only heats up for 30 seconds at a low temp, the regular 30 second button heats up much hotter. we only put it in there for about 20 seconds for night time feedings, and make sure the bottle is shaken up well and tested before its even given to her.

  • We've been using the microwave. I know it's a no-no, but it is so much easier. We have a baby food setting on ours and we only heat for 15 seconds and then we shake the shiit out of it to distribute any hot spots that might be there. I do multiple test spots just to be sure it's not too hot. It's been working just fine so far.

  • I just microwave water and put the bottle in there for a bit.  most babies aren't picky about temperature, it's more the parents thinking they need a "warm" bottle.. usually as long as it's not cold the baby won't care... shaking the bottle after heating it in the microwave will help distribute the hot/cold spots but between shaking and microwaving you're destroying all of the good stuff from the breast milk.
