Stroller with Bassinet?

DH & I were looking at strollers online last night (my parents gave us money for christmas, and we're going to get a stroller with it after our first appt - my parents said that we have to tell them when and what we spend the money on - they'll be so surprised!!)

DH likes the idea of a stroller with a bassinet (bugaboo, uppababy, bumbleride, etc), but I don't know if we'll use it that much.  I think the only way that we'll end up using it often is if I can talk DH into not getting an infant car seat.  I would love to just get a convertible seat and use the bassinet and wraps, etc - but DH is a big fan of the infant seat.

BTW, I like the uppababy vista and DH likes the bumbleride queen b.  Does anyone have one & have any advice?

Re: Stroller with Bassinet?

  • I had a cheapo snap-n-go stroller for the beginning stages so I don't have any advice on nice strollers (but one of my girlfriends has the uppavista and it pushes like a dream) but we could not have survived without the infant seat.  My #1 piece of advice is to not skip the wonderfulness of the infant seat.  I don't know how many times Maya kept sleeping in that after we'd get home from somewhere. We'd just pull it out of the car and put her in the nursery.  Voila, naptime!  It would have broken my heart to have to wake her up to pull her out of the convertible seat.

Even if you decide not to use the infant seat as part of your stroller (although same thing...they can fall asleep while being pushed and then you can leave without waking them up...) I would rethink skipping it completely.

  • My situation was exactly the same as Shauna's.  I echo her thoughts.

  • kelli has something like this - hopefully she'll respond here.

The one thing I'll say is that I *really, really* liked being able to let Andrew sleep in his car seat and transfer him to the stroller, or take him into the doctor, or whatever.

That's some great advice, I totally agree!  Ha. Both my kids liked to sleep in the infant carseat - and I didn't have to wake them up when we got somewhere.

Also - I know this doesn't matter to the OP at this point - but the infant carseat is a true necessity with 2 kids.  I couldn't hold both of them by myself.   Holding one and carrying the carseat is manageable.

And -  a tip for Shauna and other expecting 2U2 - have the toddler "help" you with the infant carseat for short distances - this keeps them 'tethered'/close to you, and also makes them feel involved.  It works very well.   My DD1 holds the carseat handle with me and we walk together.  It's slow-as-molasses, but nothing about 2U2 is quick or efficient (haha).

This.  I cannot imagine life without the infant seat.  I was so sad when we moved to the convertible.

  • I completely agree with Shauna. At over a year old we have a Britax convertible in our garage and yet we are using the infant seat still b/c Leah falls asleep in it all the time and its so easy to either let her finish napping in the seat or take the seat in the warm house and the make the transfer to her crib. She's within a 1/2 inch of outgrowing it but we are taking advantage of every last minute we have with that lovely seat :)

I think I might be a little more convinced of using wraps or something else instead of the infant seat in warm temps, but in these cold temps it so nice to leave them in the infant seat while transporting them around.  I also had a snap and go for the infant stage stroller.

I would almost say invest more in a stroller for the toddler years or after the "infant" stage b/c I would think you would get more use out of that, since a lot of kids will ride in a stroller up till like age 3 or so.

The bassinet strollers do look really cool and maybe if I lived in metro area where I didn't transport as much in a car but instead with walking or public transportation I would really consider getting one.

  • Everything Shauna said!  We also had the snap n go, and it was super wonderful.  My SIL kept talking about skipping the infant seat and going straight to the convertible car seat, but we just had to talk her out of it, lol.  She's glad she listened to us. Wink
  • We're borrowing a Peg Perego stroller from SIL, so I don't have any feedback about the strollers you listed. We did go straight to the convertible car seat, and haven't once regretted it (and that's with 7 weeks of Chicago winter weather so far), so if you want more about how that's worked for us and why we love it, let me know since it looks like I'm the only one on right now who went that route.

  • I have the 2010 Uppababy vista and LOVE it. It's definitely one of my favorite baby related purchases. I also purchased the infant seat adapter to use with it, so I could use it like a snap n go (which was awesome, BTW).

    Pros:
HUGE basket, option of bassinet/infant seat attachment/toddler seat, can work for a large-ish toddler, huge canopy (extends..baby is always shaded if needed), attachments for bug net and rain shield, drives very smoothly with one hand, height adjustable handle, ability to use two children with it (though we'll probably buy a true double stroller)....I think I could do on and on.

    Cons:
No cup holder, somewhat large size...although not much different than typical strollers

I've read that a lot of people use the bassinet as their bassinet in the master bedroom, which seems like a great idea. In all honesty though, we never used it at all because DD had reflux and refused to lay flat early on. Then she became mobile early and always wanted to "see" everything (she looked tiny riding in the toddler seat, lol).

I think having the bassinet option just depends on where you live and how much you'll be using the stroller. Even though we didn't use it, I don't regret my decision to get the UBV. I do hope we can use the bassinet option with LO#2 someday just because I love it, lol.
My biggest advice would be to try them all out in the store. We got ours at Buy Buy baby and they let us use a 20% off coupon.
Feel free to ask questions if you have any!

  • I'm going to echo everyone else's sentiments...DO NOT SKIP THE INFANT SEAT!  Yes, I'm yelling Stick out tongue

I miss the infant seat to this day.  In fact, I was just lamenting about this about a month ago since this is our first winter without it.  It's so nice to bundle up your baby inside the house and take them out all warm and covered up instead of standing outside with the door wide open to put them in their car seat.  A sleeping baby is a blessing and as much as I like(d) to wear T, being able to move him peacefully from the car to the stroller or inside the house was a godsend.  We used the infant seat for a full year and can use it for baby #2.

FWIW, I have the Bumbleride Indie and I love it.  It's not a pram, but it comes with the infant seat attachment so I could just put him in the stroller in his carseat.  I think you can buy the bassinet to use with it if you really like to.

  • Hey! Just now saw this. We have the Bumbleride Flyer and l-o-v-e it. The best part is the handle that can rotate from front to back, so we can have him facing us or facing out whenever. This has been awesome when we're out walking in the sun and want to turn him around so the sun isn't in his face, or if we're walking and the wind is blowing right in his face, etc. Also, sometimes he loves to look at mom and dad and not facing out (and will try and climb up the back of his seat to do so), so we rotate it then, too. I seriously don't know how people do it without the rotating handlebar.

As far as bassinets, we did buy the bassinet that goes with the Bumbleride. I know they obviously it's probably not recommended to do this (since it's attached to a stroller with wheels), but Rowan slept in that bassinet for the first 2 months. It is so cozy and was perfect because we could easily move the bassinet from our bedroom to the living room (we have a one story). Also, we could elevate the bassinet easily since he had reflux. I loved that bassinet and was somewhat sad when we moved him to the crib. We also used it when out and about sometimes too, but honestly we didn't really go anywhere all that much at first. It was winter and we had a newborn so no need to go anywhere!

And I echo Shauna, still get the infant seat. If you go with the Bumbleride, they include an attachment that lets you snap in most any infant seats. It also comes with the foot/leg covers for the winter which is really nice to have. I think Laura H. also has the Bumbleride but she has the Indie or Queen B I believe.

*Oh and one other thing, Bumbleride has excellent customer service!*

ditto the awesome-ness of being able to have baby face you. The UBV allows this but you move the seat (which only weighs a couple lbs).

  • We have a slow growing LO and we used the infant carrier until she grew out of it at 15 months by height.  I LOVED being able to use it for the first two winters because this whole coat issue with a toddler is a pain!  It was so much easier to just move the carrier from place to place.

Those strollers look absolutely amazing and I would love to have one like that to push around my teeny newborn in, but thinking logically about it, I doubt that I'd use it enough to be worth the money.  I think we spent too much money on the travel system and Maclaren stroller we did get because we end up putting her in the Ergo 99% of the time now since she won't throw a fit.

  • In terms of strollers we have the Bugaboo Frog.  I cannot speak from personal experience, 'yet,' but another friend who has it LOVES it!  We have only practiced ours around the house.  Smile  Once you learn how to use the stroller it is very nice.  Rides smooth, has the bassinet and the regular stroller seat, an infant car seat can be attached if you decide you want to use it, and they have a great warranty/parts policy.

I would say that if you do decide you want to use the infant car seat with a stroller like these, do your research on which best suits them.  We originally were just going to get the Graco but the adapter was a PITA, in my opinion.  We ended up going with the Peg for the Bugaboo and I am so glad we did.  The adapters are very small and can be kept in the stroller storage pouch at all times so you never have to worry about grabbing another item before heading out of the house.

Also...we really liked the Frog, basically for the fabric.  The Cameleon is nice but we weren't sold on any one color so we went with the Frog.  The price difference between the two wasn't worth it in our opinion.  Then when we were purchasing the stroller we found out that the Frog was being discontinued so we ended up getting a great deal on it!

We got ours from a small store near us but I believe Buy Buy Baby and Babies R Us are selling them on discount now.
