My twins are 2.5 weeks old. I had latch and milk supply issues while in the hospital so we started on formula. However, the goal is to breastfeed and we've been working hard in that direction. The latch seems to be ok now and my supply appears to be fine. Weight gain has been good with both.
I struggle keeping them awake at the breast. They fall asleep within 10 minutes and it does not seem to matter what I do, when back on the breast-- snooze.
Sheila has the larger appetite and we still supplement with 1 - 2 oz formula. It seems the only way to satisfy her. John is the smaller of the two and although we have stopped supplementing, I'm never sure he got enough.
Here are some of my questions....how do you know when they have had enough at the breast? If my supply is ok, do you think supplementing with forumla is ok? (my biggest issue with this is feeding takes forever!) If they are not getting enough from the breast...when do I say "let's move to formula"-- if ever?
Thanks for any input. I've been to a LC and my pedi to discuss. They seem to think we are moving in the right direction. However, it's just that the feeding takes so long and I am never sure if they are satisfied.
Re: Feeding issues
As for the falling asleep issues, make sure they aren't getting too warm. OB nurses taught me that one! Undress them a bit or try tickling their feet while you are nursing.
