Things I never used

I am starting to take note of the things that we received or bought that Kyle either hates or I never used. What do you think was a waste of money?

My list includes:

2 boppies
shoes

infant socks - he was born in August
miracle blanket - We just swaddled him in a blanket then he needed his arms free
pacifers
outfits
- I bought a lot of outfits before he came and he never wore them
tummy time mat
summer video monitor- We used it one night and DH could not handle the static. We replaced it with the Angelcare monitor- no static at all

Re: Things I never used

  • We use our Summer Infant video monitor with the sound turned all the way down in addition to our Angelcare.

I used a Boppie for a few weeks

Anything size newborn was never used.

We recieved a lot of hats we never used.

We used our pacifiers, we actually went and purchased a lot more.  I keep them everywhere.

We hardly used the tummy time mat.

     We never used our swing.

    swing- Rena hated the swing

boppy- I only nursed for 3 months and thought it was much easier without the boppy

    pacifiers- she never took them

mini cosleeper bassinet- she only slept in the pack n play the first few months

thick blankets- we received at least a dozen pink blankets and she never used them. We just used the swaddle blankets.

  • We rarely used our Bumbo.  In fact, the tray for it is still in the box in his closet!

I did like the Boppy - but I think I used it for the 1st month, then it went in the closet.

I tried a Sleep Sack and the SwaddleMe blankets a few times, but never opened the larger sizes that we received.

ETA:  i agree on the decorative bibs.  I guess they were ok for spit up - but DS wasn't a big spitter, and usually we had a burp cloth on hand.  Then when he started eating, i used them for actual food - and that was a disater!  They would just get stained and gross, so I went out and bought the plastic bibs to wipe down.  MUCH better!

  • The Woombie. Evan HATED it with a passion. The hats and decorative bibs were a waste and I feel bad getting rid of them. We pretty much used everything else - at least for a few months.

    Update-

Bathrobes! We were given at least 3 infant bathrobes and he gets pi$$ed everytime we try to put them on him.

Dx: PCOS and short luteal phase
18 cycles (3 with our RE) - Metformin + Clomid + HCG booster did the trick!
    BFP #1 6/22/09 EDD: 3/2/10 DS born: 3/8/10

    TTC #2 since Dec 2011
    BFP #2 7/8/12 EDD: 3/18/12 M/C @ 9w1d: 8/16/12

  • bassinet (used the P&P the first few months instead)

    hats

tummy time mat (a blanket on the floor worked just as well)

swaddle blankets. (DS hated to be swaddled)

    big diaper bag

Bumbo (used only a handful of times)

  • Boppy - I had such high hopes for it!  I found it awkward though and I've been nursing just fine without it for going on 4 months.

Tummy time mat - Rarely gets used. Whatever blanket is nearby just gets laid on the ground instead.

A lot of the other things you all have listed - socks (also an August baby), Bumbo, swing, swaddle blankets, Woombie, bassinet...we used & use that stuff all the time.

And our DD was in newborn sized clothes until about 6 weeks.  She was 8.3 at birth, too!

  • Funny how everyone is different. We've used most everything we got pretty well. I love and still use my boppy, the activity mat was used TONS until she started moving, the bibs were used for drooling during teething, LOVE our Summer video monitor (though the first one was super static so we got the slim and secure and NO static), DD loved her swing. And though DD was born in March, she wore socks to daycare the 6 weeks she went (it was required) and that was July and August and we wears the heck out of them now.

I'd have to say we had TOO much of some stuff. Like blankets, towels, and wash cloths. WAAAAAAY too many of those. Even if she used something for a short period of time (like her exercauser which she is over now and used for only about 2 months) she got so much use out of it during the short time that it made sense to have.

Wait, the Bumbo. We only used it a handful of times and likely could have done without it. But we did have friend's babies use it while visiting us and now my BFF's baby has it so it wasn't a total waste to me. We did use it for about a month and I don't think it was a total waste but wasn't a need either.

  • We use the boppy now more than we did for nursing. It's been great to use as a pillow around him in the not-so-stable-sitting-up days.

  • Boppy (but breastfeeding was a big fail)
    Bumbo
    Shoes
    Blankets (we used maybe 2?)
He pretty much lives in sleepers at first so a lot of his outfits never got worn in the beginning

After 2 years and 6 IUIs, we did it with IVF w/ ICSI!
    BFP with no treatment!

  • Newborn clothes ( almost 10 lb baby) and socks (July Baby).  I could kick myself for washing all the newborn clothes when she never wore any.  We do use our boppy esp for nursing and we are 5.5 months into it.  8 oz bottles and bottle liners.  Our swing also has only been used a few times.  We got a hand me down bumbo and I use that while I put my dishes away or groceries and that is all she can stand of it.  I am also glad I did not spend the money on a nursing cover, my mom made mine.  I just hardly nurse in public where I would need to cover myself.  She does not do well trying to nurse with a crowd around, she would rather watch them then eat.  She also takes the cover and kneads it like a cat does so it just bunches around her face.  We just nurse in the car most times.  I am still debating if I made a good choice with the travel system as opposed to a snap and go...its just soo bulky, but we use the stroller part for our morning walks.
  • Pack'n'play. In fact, I just Freecycled it still in the original box.

    Bumbo. Useless.

For Mathis, pacis were a bust but Tru used one until his 3rd birthday.

Bouncy chairs. Neither boy liked them. Tru hated the swing so we got rid of it and never got another for Mathis.

I had tons of burp cloths for Truitt and used them constantly but almost never used them for Mathis.

Unlike a lot of you, I loooved my boppy both for nursing and for use as a pillow. When Mathis was new, I bought a second one so I didn't have to lug the other back and forth to the baby's room.

  • We didn't buy a pack & play and haven't missed it. When we visit MIL/FIL, they have a cradle for DD to sleep in and my Mom has a pack & play for her to sleep in.  We don't need one at our house.

We got about a billion blankets.  We use the heck out of them, but we could've gotten by with much fewer.

  • Things I never used:

    - New born socks.  His feet were too long.

    - Bibs: Kolby isn't a drooler. And as we go to food they are gross! I like the plastic ones.

We borrowed a TON of items.  Swing (Loved especially during those fussy times), Bumbo: I like it to sit him in while in the kitchen, bouncy chair (we used it in the beginning and now I stick him in at while getting ready in the morning. We had a pack in play - but I bought it a long time ago and used it for my sister's child when they came.  We tried it and it never worked for Kolby.  Bassinet - we borrowed and it lasted three days.

Things I pruchased -  Boppy (I am with Rayskit on this, if I could have had 2 I would have! And we still use it for the not so good at sitting up just yet stage), Play time Mat - while I like the idea a blanket does the same thing.

Bathrobes! We were given at least 3 infant bathrobes and he gets pi$$ed everytime we try to put them on him.

Does anyone really use infant bathrobes?  Seriously!  I don't get it.  Wash the kid and put pajamas on him.  It's not like he's going to be lounging around and have to throw something on to go downstairs.

We used the ones that came with her swimsuits when we took her to the pool. That was, um, maybe three times? The bathrobes were a waste and we got like three of them. Super cute but not practical for an infant.

  • Interesting.  I still use the Boppy.  Cooper will lay in it to have his morning milk.

The thing we used the least was the PNP.  Our parents have their own and he was in his crib at 2 weeks so it really didn't get used.

We used the Bumbo for a short time, but it was borrowed from a friend.  And he had some clothes that he outgrew (and shoes) but I passed them on to another friend shortly after he was born.  We didn't have a lot that didn't get used.

But what kills me is that they make bathrobes in infant size (9mo and under usually), and then they make them for kids. But toddler sizes??? NO. I searched and searched and finally got the smallest kid size I could find last Christmas - because DD wanted one to be just like mommy and daddy. And yeah, she lounges in it! LOL!
